I like poultry. I don't raise chickens because I am allergic to chicken eggs. Instead I raise ducks. Birds provide you with a more stedy supply of edibles because of their eggs. Then, if you end up with extra roosters or get a hen that wont lay, you can eat it.
I had rabbits as a kid. One bit...
no worries :D
I certainly was not expecting to grow a 28 pound blue hubbard. I doubt I will grow them again either. The vine took over half of my back yard! Next year I am planning on trying small pie pumpkins or maybe some cinderellas.
The entire pathetic pumpkin and squash harvest. See the squirrel damage on the little one?
My big pumpkin's baby picture :D
The weigh in on the big monster.
Impressive huge leaves.
Temps were in the low 30's last night. Snow expected this afternoon. 29 tonight. I harvested the last of the corn, brought in the hubbards, picked some herbs and even transplanted some pepper plants in to pots. Since it will be nice again by Sunday, I covered the tomatoes, zucchini, etc... with...
Got any neem oil? Might not be a bad idea to hit them with a neem oil spray. I had all my indoor peppers wiped out by some bugs. Turned out to be spider mites AND whiteflies, but I keep neem oil on hand now. No more pepper cooties! :D
Well...it might be like me becoming a nutritionist... I have been low carbing for 5 years. I would have to give wrong answers to pass test and would have to be quiet during lectures and not say what I think.
Since my garden seems to be a pretty even mix between success and fail, i can talk to successful and failed gardeners without stepping on toes or getting the pity look.
Whenever someone says their yard is too small I have to laugh. I have 9 ducks and 4 quail on .167th of an acre...and most of that is covered in house, garage and shed :D
You can always get a few silkies...they don't take up much space!
Blue lake pole beans (poor growth, low yield)
Snow peas (poor growth NO yield)
Potatoes in barrels (all died)
Armenian cucumbers (got ZERO cukes despite trying 3 times)
Anasazi beans (other varieties taste better though they did grow well)
Sweet potatoes in containers (low yield - will plant in...
I am JUST NOW getting cucumbers and zucchini. I have frost blankets so i will pull those out. I shouldnt need them this week according to the forecast, but who knows?!?
I hate okra, but have dried zucchini. I like it. I have been using my dehydrator a lot this year. Mainly on tomatoes, but I have also dried cherries, peaches, grapes off my vines, several types of tomatoes, and next will be apples.
