Our melon grow in a hoop house with irrigation. They are exploding this year! We've eaten several candy-like Sugar Cube melon, just picked the 2nd petit gris de renne, and are also enjoying green-fleshed galia -type (courier?). There are 4 Fantasy watermelon, not quite ripe yet, but one is...
I won't be starting seeds until late February. This year, we are upgrading to LED lights and a new light box that is at waist level (a platform for 6 flats), as opposed to crawling around on the ground, which will be a nice change. DH has it under construction now. I hope the LEDs work well.
A lot of our snow this year has ended with pouring rain, so it's kind of crusty on top. And the driveway is a bumpy, slanted skating rink! More snow is coming Wednesday. I hope it doesn't mix with rain.
It is snowing here now, but supposed to turn to rain. I'm hoping for a quick cross-country ski before the changeover. We had a lot of rain last weekend, which led to great skating yesterday.
It's an early winter on the east coast. We were cross-country skiing in blaze orange because it overlapped with hunting season. Later we had a soaking rain, so the snow is all crusty, but the lakes now have nice ice. We've had 2 below zero mornings in a row and went skating yesterday. It has...
I find that some chickens are for production, some are not that productive but you keep them for their beautiful egg color, and some you keep because they are beautiful yard art. (I have too many chickens, of course).
The smoke made it all the way here yesterday. It didn't smell like smoke anymore, but we climbed a mountain and there was a very hazy view, despite clear weather.
Are the eggs that are getting eaten soft-shell? Whenever one of mine lays a soft-shelled egg, a hen inevitably puts their toe through it and it gets devoured. For some reason, they don't seem to make the connection between the broken egg and the firm shelled eggs that are in there, so the...
We love Thai stuffed artichokes here! Cook them long enough that you can pull out the middle section and choke. Put a lime leaf in the bottom of each artichoke. Mix some raw white fish (cut up) with an egg, curry paste, some fish sauce, maybe lime juice (I'm writing from memory). Stuff the...
Too bad the dumpers don't leave their household trash. People were doing that down the road, so someone opened the bag, found an envelope with their address, and delivered their trash back to their front yard.
My garden is not fenced and is doing well so far, although it is dry here. But 2 days ago I saw a ground hog behind the house. The garden is out front, maybe 100 yards away. Just waiting for him to discover it...
It seems like most of the country is having a late spring. We had a high of 34 yesterday, and woke up to an ice storm today. This is not normal here. It looks like the peas and onions will be going in late!
