I'm growing several "new to me's" this year. Actually I should say, I am planting several and I hope they grow. You know how gardening is. Haha.

i certainly do. last year was difficult and i learned from it. i sure hope this season goes better.

at the mid-winter sorting i start picking out next year's planting seeds. i never know exactly how many of what i'm planting because most of the beans are fill in the blanks plants for us. the line along the fence is about the only space i hold for plants because it is limited so i want to know which ones are climbers and put them there.

if i get ambitious i'll see if i can come up with some more strong enough wire mesh to keep deer out and put it around the old grape trellis which we don't use any longer... not sure that will happen. likely not. one year i planted the greasy beans, cornfield beans and jumbos on there and had a nice crop, but it is outside the fenced gardens so i did have to replant a few of the jumbos that bunnies or groundhogs nipped off.

We have rabbits, deer, coon and hogs. I used to plant stuff at the end of the garden just for the rabbits. I put a radio tuned into a talk show to keep the coons at bay. The field mice ain't scared of nothing. They love to steal my tomatoes too! Grrrrr!

Ramshorn vs Poverina Last year I grew Ramshorn (Ram's Horn) from Sandhill Preservation, and it was a great bean except that it was very late and therefore hard to save seed for, they did manage to dry down at the end. Sandhill has another pole snap bean called Poverina that sounds a lot like Ramshorn but is 5 days earlier, I don't know if that helps much but I wondered if anyone has grown it? Ramshorn is the bean in the lower right corner of my avatar photo, and had very long pods on vigorous vines, and long mauve beans. I could try to plant them out a little earlier this year.

Hard to say. Since 99% of what I plant is found material, I never really know what's going in until it does. I have vague ideas and guesses, not much else.

Problably fewer bean beans this year, now that I am done with the African grow-out. The micro bean I found earlier this year has a definite place, but beyond that most of the common beans are iffy for space.

Fewer rice beans (I have fewer) slightly more cow peas. LOTS more azukis (it's time to finish that grow-out more or less and with so few rice beans, I have the space.)

By that space thing, probably time to do some mung beans too.

Maybe I'll try some soy again.

In process. The SSE Yearbook came last week, still going through it... checking for varieties on my "want list", and prioritizing my own grow outs. Should have the list finalized by the end of February... by which time there might be a 2018 thread?
