i'm seeing sprouts in all gardens planted. not 100% germination, but fairly good so far...

i was kinda worried as it seemed to be taking longer this week compared to the first planting i did.

but all is progressing... *whew* :)

will give them all a shot of water in the morning to keep the moisture even (if it doesn't rain tonight or the chances aren't very high for the morrow).

took out varmint that was likely the most possible source of trouble as it could get through the fence if it wanted to try. i tried scaring it away but it kept coming back. now if i can get fence up in the next few weeks to see if that will hold back the deer from the bulk bean gardens i hope to plant this week. it won't be completely enclosed so perhaps may be a loss, but that is why i only plant the bulk beans out in those gardens (and plant them last).

hmm, 2nd varmint sighted the other day, it wasn't over near the fenced gardens and i wasn't able to get out there with the air rifle in time to give it a good scare. i've been working in the neighboring space so it hasn't come back yet. i'm much happier if it doesn't...

will be doing some more bean planting this afternoon of the part of the garden i have finished now. then hope to get the other parts done in the next few days. it's getting a bit late... i'll put in the smaller and earlier beans and hope they have enough time.

I have 2,000 square feet of gardening ground that I spent 4 grand to fence out deer last year, and I haven't planted it yet as it's too wet to work with. I figure my cutoff date will probably be about the 24th of June. last year I planted this particular piece of ground and then it rained 6 inches in 9 hours and most of what I planted never came up. Now I'm looking at possibly another no go year on this piece of ground. I went to look at it a few days ago and pulled a couple weeds and you couldn't shake the dirt of the weeds roots. It was just a ball of mud.

I think I need to cover the ground with tarps in the fall and take them off in the spring only when I work the soil then recover the ground to keep the soil more on the dry side.

@Bluejay77 , sorry to hear about the bad weather. I really understand your frustration, having had the same problem in recent years (about 4 of the last 5). The weather has been much better this year, dry enough to work the ground, and warming early. I could have probably put the entire garden in; but of course, THIS year I just had to injure my foot. :somad Frustration we much. :he All is not lost, though, still planted about 1500 square feet at home.

oh my that's a lot of $...

it may be easier to trench it and raise up the rows where you plant so that the water stays down lower. we have flash flood issues at times so out back where the fenced gardens are i have raised beds in almost every garden (otherwise i wouldn't as i hate fighting gravity and having all these hills/edges).

one of my gardens outside the fenced area i used to run a fairly deep trench down it each year to collect water and i also used it as my spot to put random organic materials through the season and then at the end of the season i'd move the trench to either side and bury the existing one. it would get so much water at times things would be floating and i wanted to catch it there instead of having it run off. in our heavy clay soils it helps to give me some dry and warmer soil areas.

once i got drains installed nearby to take care of overflows i didn't need that trench any longer so the garden has been raised up in the middle instead (i like to catch any dirt potentially running off instead of having it go into the neighboring pathway)

i'm working on this particular garden this week because it is where i plant most of the beans outside the fence and i can see it from my perch here so have a chance of defending it against various critters.

yesterday the first beans went in, 10 short rows... :)

yeah, injuries can make gardening a challenge... i fell while carrying a shovel once and broke a bone in my hand one spring. made the rest of the season go at half speed often punctuated by me muttering at myself for using the injured appendage. too bad we can't just regrow them when needed (would be nice for back issues and arthritis).

I just received an email about a Canadian Seed co. here in B.C. selling a baby bush lima bean, no other name, here's their description...
2.5" pods contain 4 plump beans. Dating back to Civil War times. These are good for freezing or baking. M=70 days $3.00
Do you think these would be comparable to Baby Fordhook or something different? Although I don't grow Limas I'm thinking I should buy a couple of pkts. for my seed stash. Sorry, this outfit doesn't send to the U.S. but some seeds seem to make their own travel arrangements :).

Edited to add... did a bit more searching and I think this is the same as Henderson's Baby Bush which is readily available so think I'll give it a pass. Thought I was onto something for a minute.

At one of my Hardwood nursery plots. I planted semi runners again in the same place I had them last year. Last years planting was like a bush bean. Just let them vine on the ground with rows 28 inches apart. They grew together in one large mass. Sometimes I had to shell beans in that patch to tell which row I was in and what I was harvesting. This year the rows are 36 inches apart and I'm trying to grow them on 3 foot tall poles. Hope the harvetsing will be easier.

Got the pole beans all mulched now with grass clippings about two days ago. Started cutting grass and mulching the semi runners yesterday. I let one volunteer in the middle of one of the rows grow. That bean has been growing since about the middle of May.
