Oh, I have done this since Russ started it. I had to drop out a couple of seasons after we moved. The soil was so bad, even beans didn't want to grow in it. LOL I battled rabbits, happily a family of hawks built a nest on our fence line and they have done a lot to control the rabbit explosion.

dang newbies (i meant me btw )! lol glad to have you back and able to grow beans for the network. bunnies get a fair share around here. i've been scaring them away lately - haven't seen too many. deer tracks all over the place tho...

I went through my spreadsheet the part for the Network beans. It was interesting to cross referrence the spreadsheet for the Network beans with what is actually in the freezers. There are 67 varieties where some of the original seed still exists that the Network was started with.

Out of these original stocks of seed. There are 11 varieties that have not been grown at all. I'm sure their germination is still intact as the seed has been kept in the freezer. There had been even more of these never have been grown varieties that were requested last year and a number of them went out to growers this year. So the number of varieties that have never been grown the list is shrinking. I have grown some of them myself.

Varieties that were part of the network that were requested by growers and have never been returned either because they didn't grow or destroyed by animals or other reasons that I wouldn't even know about. I would call them gone forever beans. There are 26 of those varieties.

Bean varieties that have been requested that renewed seed has not been returned yet. There are 38 seed samples in this category.

@Bluejay77 if you can list the ones that have never come back and are considered gone on a "WANTED or MIA" page perhaps some people will see them and be able to send them back to you?

if i'd known which you were missing i could have asked at the seed swap...

I looked at the record I printed out this morning and looks like 12 never been grown out. They are as follows.

Badda Di Polizzi Blanda - Pole
Bolita Mix - Pole
Ice Cream Sandwich - Unknown growth habit (Probably Pole) and the seed looks like the species "Dolichios lablab"
Kim's Italian - Semi Runner Maybe Half Runner almost like a pole bean
Large White Lima - Bush
Missouri Wonder - Pole
Nickell - Pole
Powder Star - Pole
Rattlesnake - Pole
Shumway Experimental - Bush Snap
Tarahumara Purple - Bush Dry
White Baby Lima - Pole


@Lady0bug, The Shumway Experimental would probably be a good bet for your Minnesota climate.

@Bluejay77 Bolita Mix might get my vote, since i was curious i googled images and did not come across anything for that one nor could i find it on your website.

however, as we were trying to get the Red Bolita to grow last year and failed i did see a picture and it made me curious if these are the RB's we tried to grow. they look like a large red seed and are usually coming from Columbia SA so they may be the beans.

i guess i'm not sure if any commercial bean is one that you want in the collection though... hmm...

Yeah might be the Red Bolito. Try to find some that will grow. If they are not heat treated they will probably grow.

I'd love to try Ice Cream Sandwich (if only because by this point I am interested in ANY lablab that isn't Ruby Moon). However as I am rather too far north to get most lablabs to full cycle, I'd better demure.

If anyone else does that one remember that most colored seeded lablabs (I am assuming that, with a name like Ice Cream Sandwich, it is a black or brown seeded version with a while hilum scar) are poisonous as mature seed and can only be eaten as immature pods or after extensive leaching.
