I think I reported wrong before. Veense was the one that came up last but reached the top of it's trellis first. It was also the one I dug up and found the BIG roots before the sprout emerged.

Second to make it to the top is Witsa

Several others bushed up a little before starting the climb. Karachaganack is slow to to start vining but first to bloom. These are the first bean flowers in my garden this year and I like fast maturity in all my crops. It even beat out the early bush types that were planted the same day so I'll be watching this one real close.

@Bluejay77 , are your beans going to climb or sprawl? Are you putting up any supports?

My pole beans and semi runners that I plant will climb. Bush beans will stand up until they get heavy with pods then lean over a bit on their side. Then they will reorient their leaves to the sun.

Let us know how your 2012 beans grow. I've did a germination test on my 2012, 2013 and 2014 beans. When beans become 5 years old I think it's probably a good idea to test them. Maybe I should put all my results on another post.

I bought a pint jar at a yard sale one time, one of those with the class top and wire bail, about half full of what looked like lima beans. It was so old the rubber seal had deteriorated and adhered to the class. About half of the seeds were just dust where some critter had apparently eaten them. I planted the rest and two sprouted. Unfortunately they almost immediately died. Someone told me I might have done embryo rescue and saved them but I have no clue how to do that. Anyway it shows that seeds can sometimes last a very long time.

Couple days ago I did get one bush bean variety planted. Robert Lobitz's "Lake Avenue Beauty".

Friday I rototilled an area about 1,600 square feet two times over on a new offsite location which the owner has keep as a garden for many years. I talked to him last autumn and he agreed to rent the ground to me. The total piece is 2,287 square feet. Yesterday June 8th, I planted the following pole beans on that ground. I still have two more rows consisting of 14 more pole varieties to plant on this offsite piece. I will have semi runners to plant there also probably later in the week.

I planted Karachaganak this spring and have a harvest. It was right up there with the bush beans I planted as far as bloom and production and early maturity. I planted the round seeds instead of the oval and they produced rounded seeds, no oval shaped ones. The pole beans produced true color/pattern though a few have more black that I think they should. The blacker ones are not from a separate plant so I consider them a natural variation.

But there is a story. My 3-year-old grandson pulled a plant when they were about 6" tall. I didn't supervise him close enough and we had just finished pulling some carrots so it was a good learning moment. I stuck a seed back in it's place at the end of a row. That one plant grew back as a bush, not a pole. As you can see, it kept the Karachaganak look. So I take it mine may still be segregating a bit.

Russ, as long as yours produce true I consider you to have the official Karachaganak seed. I don't but I'm OK with that, mine are still nice enough I just won't share as a variety. I plan to plant the bush seed and see what happens. As pretty as that seed is I'd love to develop a bush variety.

@Ridgerunner are those good for snaps or shellies? i have a similar bean going to those here but the one i have has spots too. i also don't know if it is a bush or semi-runner yet. i'll find out this year if all goes well. i wasn't able to come up with a name for them but i asked Mom and she said Dominoes so that is my working title for these for the moment.
