Lima:
Fordhook lima (@flowerbug)

in going through my old notes i now have a question mark on those seeds that i need to resolve somehow. they possibly could be Henderon's Baby Lima beans instead. so if you have any experience with those already it would be nice to know if you can tell one way or another. :)

they are the lima beans i've been growing for a long time and back when i started out i didn't know i was going to be doing so much so i didn't keep the best of records.

I'm probably missing something :)

the soup peas i sent you? very tendrilly. :) yummy as fresh peas too.

I have technically grown Hendersons but it's been many, many years and I don't remember much about it so I probably won't be a huge help but I can take some pictures of what pops up.

Yeah, I have a lot of soup peas to try! My 'list' is currently a shoebox full of packets that I need to sort. :-D

i will be interested in whatever happens. will probably try to grow some Henderson's this year to do a side-by-side comparison with what i normally grow. if they look the same, flower the same and bear about the same pods/seeds then i'll know one way or another. :)

i just don't like that i don't know for sure. details are important.

haha! i've taken a detour on my bean work the past few weeks. i needed to take break. now that i have the stuff done i was working on i can get back to it before i have to start getting ready for planting again. maybe even have a small seed swap somehow. we'll see how it goes.

Just a note that Jibril (my seed seller from Ghana, who I buy from on Etsy frequently), has a new lima bean up (there are four others already on the site, but they appear to be ones that the people of this group already have.)

https://www.etsy.com/listing/118714...arch_query=lima&ref=shop_items_search_2&frs=1

Bear in mind that the price may be revised (Jibril normally charges a lot more for his seeds, since a big part of the price goes to the phyto certificate.) It's also the only one I have ever seen from him with a lot count, so his supply may be limited.

First of March is when I typically start my warm weather seeds. The season seems to be a bit slow getting started this year so I'll push back a bit. Highs in the 10-day forecast are in the 70's, occasionally pushing 80's. Lows typically in the 60's, a few 50's. In Celsius think highs around 24C, lows around 17C.

My plans (and we all know how plans work) is to plant some Blue Jay bush beans this weekend for snap beans and see how they sprout. If they come up OK then I'll plant the rest. The "rest" are 4 bush beans and 12 climbing beans, all segregations I'm trying to stabilize.

Lately I've loved Ojo de Cabra -- a great flavour that pairs nicely with smoked meat. I think I tried Orca/Calypso too, and it was pretty good.
I tried for the first time last weekend a san stephano borlotto D aveto bean and it cooked up nice. Is a beige seed and red flecked bean like so many are patterned.

i got some of my beans to a friend in the further south so we'll see how they do there. they only really wanted one or two varieties, but i'm a firm believer in sharing my cross breeds around (and i also sent Purple Dove) so that i can see how they do in various climates but also i encouraged the person to pass along any beans they did not want. they said they would and perhaps knew some other gardeners in the area. so if that happens it will be a three for one and give them more gardener friends in the area to know. we'll see what happens. :)

Maybe next year I could help you out. I've got the Network growouts, Tartan Dark (C), a naked seed pumpkin, and a corn project for me to play with this year. Wish I knew what an average time to tassel was for popcorn. I have some I need to grow out, but don't want to do that with the other project.
