Seedlings and their tiny root systems aside, I'm not convinced moles do much damage. They always love my bean rows and the only time it causes problems is when the yellow jackets find out there's a pre-made tunnel down there.
Ew. We've not had yellow jackets in their holes (that I know of), but I'm pretty sure voles will use them. It's the hole/tunnel diverting water away from my plants that I'm not happy about. Puts a new spin on air pruning though! 🤣

i've not had problems from yellow jackets using the tunnels but mice, chipmunks, voles have often taken advantage of them.

normally i would leave them alone as long as they are not causing issues in other ways but the problem they're causing for me this season is that they are running along under the black plastic (which is topped with crushed rinsed limestone mulch) and the tunnels are making it uneven to walk on. for both of us we are not very coordinated at times (Mom is more unsteady than i am) it can even be bad enough to turn an ankle or put you off balance enough to fall. i have to warn Mom to be careful out there.

I couldn't be more pleased with Ga Ga Hut! @Bluejay77, was this one of the Stephen McComber beans?
I got the bean originally from a fellow who called himself Phil Seneca from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2014. He said he was a Seneca. I got several native beans from him. All have grown well that I had obtained from Phil. However the Ga Ga Hut amazed me by it's earliness and production of a second flush. How has the bean grown for you so far?

It's doing remarkably well and is loaded with blossoms and tiny beans! I'm impressed with how healthy and vigorous it looks despite our prolonged cool, wet (and dark!) Spring & early Summer. A second flush in a year like this would REALLY be something, wouldn't it?! I can't wait to see how it plays out.

Thank you so much for the historical info on Ga Ga Hut! 😄

I think you should grow Seneca Allegheny and GaGa Hut next to each other next year so that you can join in the debate as to whether they are different. I grow both, but not in the same year due to the risk of confusion. I plan to grow both in a community garden plot some year when I don't need to save seed from either.

I have not seen Seneca Allegheny but just by your suggestion that I grow and compare it. It to is probably another native bean. I'm guessing that it is also Ga Ga Hut which was probably grown by a different Iroquois nation and came out with a different name.

Iroquois Cornbread is another of those native Iroquois nation beans that has two other names and very likely the same bean. Skaroora Bread and Tuscarora Bread.

Hallelujah, we got rain! Two good, soaking rains in the last week, week and a half. And it has been  hot too. It's so great to have a break from watering duty! Lol

'Ice' bean, just couldn't resist trying a few even though these are for seeds! Colour is gorgeous, and icy grey green! This one is wonderfully named. 😍

Network bean 'Gill's Delicious Giant' has huge pods! Photo doesn't show it very well, but these are big beans!

Couple bean photo updates. Strangely, one of the Frank Barnett network beans just upped and died on me, but there are 3 plants still. Not sure why, the rest are all fine. But most of the beans are doing great. There are lots of pods out there. A few are huge plants with runners but not yet grabbing :rant, we'll see what happens with those. Lots of stubborn searching vines this year!

🤣 I think I'll just choose to believe they're different strains of the same bean! Do their seeds look alike?

Trying to do an online comparison of these two beans started me down a rabbit hole into beans of the First Nations. So many beans to try! My entire family is intrigued with Deseranto potato bean. Phil (Russ' source of GaGa Hut) says it "tastes very good."
