They use milk and eggs as a loss leader to get you in the store. They run a bare bones work force. You stick a quarter in a slot in the cart, which unlocks it. When you are through shopping, you return the cart, plug the chain back in and get your quarter back. So they aren't paying anyone to go get the carts from the parking lot or anyone to stand in the doorway shoving carts at you. They don't have free bags, bring your own, or you can buy theirs. Aldis is about 30% cheaper than Walmart.

I've never been to an Aldis, but I drive by one when I visit the Chinese buffet in Festus.

You should stop in the next time you pass by.

If we stopped in it would only be to look around.
The reason for going to the Chinese buffet is because we never cook at home so not much use for groceries.

I go to a very upscale nursery that does the quarter to unlock cart. The few times I didn't happen to have a quarter in my change I almost left I was so angry

Never been to one, I don't'think they are in NY

They are in New York. There is one in Clifton Park and one under construction here in Brunswick. We shop there frequently as the prices are much better than the competition.

They sell a lot of non-grocery items there, too. Wine, tool kits, crock pots, blankets, etc. I imagine they get all those things from China. Or close-outs from other wholesalers.
And I would think the low priced fresh organic stuff is sold as a loss-leader, too. If you are going in there to stock up on the specials, and spend a quarter on a shopping cart, their theory is that you're going to fill that cart with other stuff they can make a profit on.

We were in an Aldi's once. DW had a hard time figuring out what to purchase as much of the savings is in large quantities. I went around looking at the labels and, quite frankly, we'll never go back. We may be obsessive about this one thing . . . DO NOT BUY ANYTHING LABELED "MADE IN CHINA" OR "PRODUCT OF CHINA". I wish every American would adopt this mindset. Walmart, Tractor Supply and Harbor Freight Tools are major importers of Chinese garbage too. Our entire family studies every label and always return items to the shelf that are Chinese.

I agree Smiles Jr.
You have to look very carefully too. A lot of things in stores just say that they have a U.S. distributor and don't reveal where they were made.
