Amaryllis

My new red amaryllis, the one I bought DD, that had had the roots chopped off, glued to a decorative Christmas board with a small cardinal next to it, named "Waterless Amaryllis," has been sitting in a plastic cup of water.
It sounds like plant torture!
It now has numerous roots, although small, seems every 2 days it continues to recover.
I chopped off the flower stem. The small leaves are getting taller.

How LONG should I keep it growing in straight water?

How LONG should I keep it growing in straight water?

Not long. It will send out roots in the soil. It may not bloom next year because of its' cannibalization. Let in grow putting it outside in the pot in the summer. Fertilize it to rebuilt the bulb for next time. Let the leaves grow lush.

they are used to very tough conditions.

You may remember from an old post that I hybridized Amaryllis bulbs many years ago. I had potted them all up together and left them that way for any years. Last summer I repotted the whole lot of them, giving some of the small lingering bulbs more room and a better chance to bloom. Some bulbs had grown huge, so giving them more space gave them room to flourish also. This is a double that is showing gratitude with it's extra care.

Someone mentioned this plant to me recently. It's really pretty I may get one of these. Are they at all toxic to animals?

@catjac, so Amaryllis like tight feet? I kept one going/growing several years ago, and I put it in one of my beds, and brought it before the first frost.
Advice?

Yes. With their shoulders above the soil. I love them in pots and put them out for the summer. I rarely repot unless the soil shrinks.

so far this has been the strangest spring ever with my amaryllis bulbs. normally i water them and they start to poke up fairly soon afterwards. this year i started watering them some time ago and i see no signs of any of them poking up.

the only things i've done differently this year was stopped watering them a few weeks earlier last fall and we've kept the house a little warmer through the winter. maybe that confused them... hmm... dunno...

in the three pots i have probably about a dozen bulbs about evenly divided between small sprouts that were starting and full grown bulbs.

well, if i've managed to kill them all off at once that would be a surprise to me since i've had them going around 16 years now and given away a few dozen babies. they've been about as care free a houseplant as i could want. going dormant during the winter is ok with me.

I cannot imagine that you killed them. If the bulbs are hard they should be just fine.They seem to regrow when they feel like it but do like when the spring gives them a bit of warmth.
