every time we go out, i drive, i cannot stand how Mom drives, it makes me too paranoid. she won't have her eyes worked on.

the past few times we've been out there has been someone in front of us all over the road. not even keeping it between the lines. don't know if they were drunk, drugs or what, but i was very glad when they turned off and wished them a safe journey (and everyone they passed).

i do not mind if someone is doing speed limit or a few in either direction, but at 45 or below you should be running with hazard lights and off to the side from time to time to let others by.

Tahnk goodness my MIL decided at 85 she no longer wanted to drive. She was getting slower in her reaction time, etc... now we have to take her to Dr. store etc. But are happy to do so if it will prevent and accident.

Even after my mom was in assisted living, she would periodically say she wanted to get a car, so she could get around by herself. The problem was, she couldn't even get into the car by herself, let alone turn her head to see what's in that blind spot.
I think that was her little passive-aggressive way of wanting assurance from me that it was no trouble to take her on her errands.
Years before, the last time she drove me anywhere, she would brake and take to the side of the road when she met a car.

I agree the slow response time is what concerns me. Not so much the slow speed. I just don't think they could react fast enough to hit the brakes if a child or dog ran in front of them.

I always thought hit and runs where very serious, one of the worst driving offences there is. A couple of years ago the family was meeting at a restaurant. My father insisted he could drive himself. She showed up at restaurant very shaken turns out he got lost was making a u turn and hit a parked car. He got scared and took off without leaving a note. In this day of security camera everywhere we decide to call police and let them know. They sent a officer to make a report. 1st question what street did it happen? my dad I don't know I was lost. 2 nd question what kind of car you hit? my dad white all I remember. Cop I wouldn't worry have a good night. I think the police overlook a lot when it comes to senors driving.

Here is something very typical that everyone contends with, even in Sunday traffic.

Yesterday: I turn onto a one-way street and after traveling one block stopped behind a car waiting at a red light. I'm in the left lane behind a car and there is a car waiting in the right lane. A 4wd pickup pulls up behind me. Newer, it has those rivets in the fenders and a big, black front bumper.

The pickup driver decides he wants to be in the right lane. As the vehicle rolls slowly in that direction, I move the car forward a couple of feet because he has stopped so close behind me. The light changes to green and both vehicles in front of us turn off the street. The pickup is soon a couple of car lengths ahead of me which is a good thing because the interstate onramp is in my lane within 4 blocks from that red light and he intended to take it!

I notice a blue SUV in my rearview mirror, no other cars behind me. It's travelling much faster than my vehicle. That driver moves to the right hand lane and passes me as I notice my speed, 38 in a 30 mph zone.

Suddenly the SUV is in front of me and headed up that onramp! I would guess that he or she handled that maneuver driving about 50mph.

All this happened within 4 blocks from that red light (just checked the map ;)). The driver of the pickup would have had no idea how fast or slow I would be driving. I had just entered that one-way street as the light turned red. He likely would have had to return to the left lane behind me if the 2 cars in front had remained on that street. I can imagine some level of impatient aggravation, if he had.

That the blue SUV chose to pass me on the right and ride the pickup's back bumper up the onramp must have made both drivers feel like they were in a cavalry charge entering Interstate 90!!

Me ... I was relieved to see them disappear up the ramp as I continued with no other traffic in sight. Windows down and still 8mph over the speed limit, I passed a group of Russian olive trees in full bloom. Their lovely fragrance filled the car for a few blocks as I continued towards my destination.
