Neighbors across the street have been allowing their elderly golden retriever to run loose occasionally. This morning it ambled out into the road during the 7AM rush, and got hit by a car. DH and I both saw it (again). The dog managed to get up and hobble/hop away, out of our sight. But I could hear the whack when it hit. It wasn't just a tap. Of course the driver didn't stop. DH went over to the house and told the man his dog got hit by a car. So far, I haven't seen anyone leave with a dog on a blanket, heading to the vet. (I don't spend my days glued to the window, but we have a pretty good view of the road without even trying)
I just hope the poor thing isn't lying over there, in pain. Maybe it got to the back yard and died?
I am thinking I will wait till this evening and go over there. I want to ask how the dog is doing, and what the vet said. And if he says he didn't take it to the vet? Then what should I do?
Am I being too nosey? This is the same house that had the black dog that got hit last fall. That we witnessed. Took them about a week to get a replacement dog. Which promptly started coming over here to check out Penny. I tied the dog to a tree in our front yard, and gave the owner a piece of my mind. Then the dog adopted the new neighbor, and now stays in his yard. Not over here. Smart dog.
This whole thing just rubs me wrong. Disposable dogs.

It is easy to take a dog to a vet-if you have thousands of dollars available. Of course I would bring mine and go into debt getting it treated. But, prices are out of control and unavailable to many people. Still they should at least have it put down if it is suffering.

I remember having a dog when I was young -- Sugar was her name -- that got hit by a car. Dad did take her to the Vet, but brought her home again. The Vet said he wasn't sure anything he did would help and that she just might be all right if left to heal on her own. What the Vet wanted would have cost $100's back in the 19650s.

Once she healed you could never tell she'd had her back legs broken. Smarter dog after that as well. She never again went into the street.

So sorry you had to see that again :hugs:hugsThat must be so horrable watching a dog hit by a car. I am lucky I have never seen any animal hit, I have seen plenty dead by the side of road. Because you saw it happen i would have no problem knocking on door and asking how the dog is.

There are new cats in my neighborhood. One is one fat cat, but I don't think she's pregnant. Maybe.

She really likes to visit my yard. This morning, a car sped by, I suppose that the driver was late and thought that there wouldn't be any kids that early, walking to the elementary school. I saw that fat, grey cat waiting patiently but, ya know, I realized that I haven't seen her companion, a calico, all week.

I thought about going over to say something to the owners but ... I'm not complaining just thinking about the lifespans of cats in this neighborhood. I doubt if it averages over a couple years, 16 or 18 months after they show up outdoors. Those young parents of the elementary kids are not the most careful drivers, either.

People have different ideas about pets. I once told a farmer I worked for that his young dog wasn't very careful around machinery. I often could not see her when I was driving the combine and didn't want to run over her. I guess I have lived a sheltered life but decades later I still remember how he said, "if she makes that mistake, she won't do it twice."

I would prefer not to have a pet than to have one that lives with so much risk. So Lucky, I doubt if you can embarrass the owners into taking better care of the critters.

When we get a pet it become a member of our family, so if it gets sick or hurt off to the vet it goes, this can run into the big bucks so for each pet we've had I put $15 away each month to go towards vet bills if needed, if I couldn't afford this I wouldn't have a pet.
Right now we only have one house kitty she's 8 now, had her since she was a kitten, she's been very healthy so she has more money in the bank than I do, I keep spending mine on plants :).
When we had dogs we had and still have a 6 ft. fence around our yard which kept them in, we have a 4 lane highway just outside our back fence, there's no way they left home unless on a leash. To see or hear of an animal hit by a car really upsets me, It's up to pet owners to keep their pets out of harms way, it they don't IMO they shouldn't have one.

That is a great idea, but that would not go far around here. My vet wanted $500 to put my dog out and clean her teach. I found dog chews that turned her teeth pearly white. $8000 for the horse hospital to LOOK at your sick horse. $4000 for dog's broken leg to be operated on. 300 to fix a cat, 500 to fix your dog. I wonder if I'll be able to afford a dog or cat when my pets get old. I am lucky they have all been very healthy.

Yep, those bills can add up real quick but every little bit helps, it might mean the difference between being able to save a much loved pet or having to have it put down.
