I hate to see a dog get hit. I hate even worse to hit one. I have hit dogs a couple of times and no, I didn't stop. It might seem mean to not stop but I didn't want to get into an altercation with ignorant people. The very same people who let their dogs run loose will be ready to fight if you run over it and want you to pay the vet bill. The way I see it, if their dog suddenly means so much to them, then why didn't they keep it in their own yard and off the road? If my dog got run over, it would be my fault for it being out in the road.

There is a man around the corner from us with a Great Pyrenees that just showed up and stayed with him. Her name is Fluffy. She is a "country dog" meaning that she runs loose, and she chases cars. We always slow way down so we don't hit her. The funny part is that she only chases cars when George is home. If he isn't home she doesn't even get off the porch. I stopped one day to tell him that and he thought it was funny, but was also relieved that he wouldn't come home to her run over out in the road.

It is a PITA to open and close the 16' gate on our driveway, but it keeps our dogs IN and other dogs OUT. Our neighbor Kyle has a French Bulldog that he lets out every day when he gets home. He is outside with Pepe, but that doesn't stop Pepe from coming over to our house to see what's up, such as chasing chickens, tormenting our dogs and getting into trouble. Pepe is the world to Kyle and it would start a range war if I shot Pepe for killing my free ranging chickens, so I close my gate. The worst Pepe can do is insult my dogs by peeing on the gate post.

I hit a dog once, right in front of our house. A black lab at night, he was impossible to see... He was dead when I got to him, but we carried him up to the house and called Animal Control. He had a license tag so they contacted his owners, I was glad not to have to deal with that.

I have had a dog hit on the road also. He was Ridgeback Saluki cross that I got from an ad. He was a year old when I got him and the people who were relieving themselves of him said it was because they were" having a baby and wouldn't have time for him". Right.
After I had him for two days I knew the real reason. That dog was a runner, there was no keeping him home except on a tie out, he was also high strung and nipped Kid#1 who was 3 at the time. He got out of the fenced yard shortly after that and got hit down the road from our house, so that at least saved me from taking him on a one way walk into the woods.

I took him to the vet, he had a broken jaw and some other injuries. They wired his jaw and kept him sedated for two days.
The vet called me and said the injury was one that was recoverable (is that a word?) but the dog was a poor patient and in his case he didn't think he'd do well. So after all that I had him put down. Then I had a dead dog and a big vet bill.

To top it off I was contacted by the hitters insurance company. The dog did $700 worth of damage to the kids car, but at least my homeowners policy covered that.

So live and learn I guess. Some dogs are poor risks to own, but it's not always possible to know what you've got right away.

Bay I agree with you not stopping, people are quick to anger whether or not they are in the right.
That doesn't mean that it didn't make me feel terrible......
Once I was going to Houston for truck parts in pouring rain. A dog ran out in front of me and I hit it. There was a car beside me and one behind me, I had no where to go. I called my husband bawling, I felt so bad, but there was nothing I could do.

When my kids started driving, I told them not to wreck their car swerving to miss a dog, cat, rabbit, squirrel, etc. I told them firmly to HIT that animal and not a pine tree or other car and kill themselves over a animal in the road.

All parents should have that talk, when kids start to drive. Also if someone wants to carjack their car don't put up fight and get right out of car. Here people are shot and killed because they don't want to give up their car.

@Nyboy I sure did have that "talk" with my kids. No loud music, no hauling 27 friends all over the place, SLOW down on curves and I even forbade driving on certain dangerous roads that had lots of wrecks. It went something like this; I didn't carry you for 9 months, give birth, raise you, spend a crap load of time and money on you for you to go kill yourself in a car wreck. I WILL pick up your dead body and KICK your DEAD ASS!
