I have a trumpet vine. No problems touching the stems, leaves, or flowers. Mowing keeps the thing from spreading and under control.
I have heard of planting autumn clematis with other climbing vines for faster coverage. The clematis grows quickly and is cut back each year to grow again. This fills in all the spaces quickly while the slower growing vine gets started.
