In an earlier home, I had the use of a vacant lot for a garden. After I told 3 neighbor boys that they were not welcome to ride their bikes thru the garden, they came back to ask if they could build "a track" around the outside of it! What?! No!

When they did that anyway, I wrote the name and phone number of the owner of the lot and carried over to give to their mother. I was much too angry but I wanted their parents to know who had permission to use that land. They were grounded and I stopped back to talk to their father a couple days later about easing up on them. It probably wasn't the best but they stayed out of the garden after that.

A good neighbor in my neighborhood had a 5 year-old girl when I moved here and built a greenhouse in my current backyard.

One day, I saw her come out of the greenhouse and head on out of the yard. I went in to find that she had turned 2 flats - upside down! Immediately, I carried a flat after her to her front door. Her mother came right out and stood there while I inspected that flat. There wasn't a single broken plant so everything turned out well. I did point out the value of the plants before I even began to look carefully at them.

I know the little girl was scared about all this but she shouldn't have been in our yard, uninvited, anyway. Her mother told her so and there were no harsh words to either of them from me. And, they continued to be good neighbors, the both of them :).

A five year old is old enough not to "collect " things from other people's property. My 4 year old grandson has never pulled up a plant marker. He and his parents have lived with us since before he turned 3. My 20 month old grandson pulled up 1 or 2 markers. I told him no that the markers were grandmas' and he does not touch them. They are both frequent helpers in the garden. Many of their toys are shovels, rakes and egg collection baskets. The neighbor's child should not be wandering unattended into your property for many more reasons than your markers. It will be your fault if she gets hurt even if mom wasn't watching her.

The mother did explain to her son not to bother with my garden, but he took the markers instead !!! They also said they were going to put up fence for their puppy , but its been over a month. I just have to put more wired fence around it. Now I have to plant my pumpkin seeds all over again, I wont be able to have a big one for fall.

Oh no Desertlady! I am so sorry.

That's the kind of thing that could happen to any of us, and we all hope it doesn't.

Is there any possible way you can get another Pumpkin plant partially grown?

Oh, and the stakes for recognizing. You'll have to go by memory and plant recognition. There are ways. Some of the Pepper varieties will be taller, some wider, some with glossier leaves, some with longer leaves, some with colored flowers.

Hang in there DesertLady!

Thank you ! as for the pumpkin I can probably buy some from our local nursery. But the fustrating part is that I worked on that plant for so long and to find it destroyed !! I may reconized some of my peppers, hopefully I will find the right ones !! Anyways it will be kind of fun trying to guess whats growing in the garden ! I have several volunteers showing up along with it !! This weekend I am going to put more fencing around some of my garden, in hope to keep the puppy and jackrabbits out !! Have a great Memorial weekend !!

Last year I had a tomato plant on the side of the house where we couldn't see it without making a special trip that direction (blind wall, nothing else on that side of the house). The neighbor's 8 year old son and his friend picked all the tomatoes off and threw them at each other!

No respect for other people's property. I am curious about what the parents did.

We have 2 sets of new neighbors with young kids. The one set watches their kids pretty well, but the other not at all. One morning I woke up, got the kids ready and off to school, I had an appointment that morning so about 10 minutes after the kids left I went to get in my car and low and behold, there sat the one neighbors kids trikes. I had half a mind to just run it over, but I couldn't. Instead I walked it over to their porch and hung it oa their door. These are the same neighbors that throw a ball into my neighbors yard for theirdog to fetch and then got mad t me for kicking their dog when it tried to attack our puppy in OUR YARD! I told them that the next time I caught their dog in my yard I was going to shoot it. The firs time I catch one of their kids in my garden... I WILL spank them.
