When I have expecting ewes, I check them first thing when I get up. Lily is the last to Lamb. I had already done morning chores and was looking out the bathroom window and noticed she was restless. She dug nests, laid down, then was up again.
This is the first time we got to watch a birth.
After repeated down-push-up she had the Lamb half hanging out, and gave a final push.
Lily licked and baa’d softly to her Lamb. He was on his feet and nursing within 8 minutes.
That is totally wondrous Bay! Thanks for sharing those pictures. I love your little black headed lambs.
Growing up our old ewe, "Ma" always seemed to lamb in the afternoon. The one time she had trouble was when I was in HS and just gotten home. She had a ginormous lamb, shoulders back who was stuck. She had been up and downing so much trying to birth him that his poor little head was all beat up. I ran to our neighbor who was the 4-H sheep leader and she was able to push him back and pull a foreleg out. He was weak but alive, and had a twin brother who had been impatiently waiting his turn. We named the first guy Job, for all his tribulations. Middle name was Dinner of course.
What? She only had a single? Off with her head.....
Seeing those pix actually makes me wish I had sheep-love lamb. Luckily I come to my senses and remind myself all I know about sheep is that they can get sick and die....
