Butternut squash

Has anyone ever tried substituting butternut squah for pumpkin? I have had no luck with pumkins yet, but I have a ton of butternut squash.

In what recipe? I would think anything would be fine, other than maybe "pumpkin" pie. I eat pumpkin, like squash- so why not the other way...?

Oh absolutely. I think butternut squash makes better pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread than pumpkin does, frankly -- and I gather that what's sold commercially as "pumpkin", you know in the cans at the supermarket, is actually a large squash very similar to butternut.

So, by all means do it

Next year, I'm going to try my hand at growing the new, small, blue hubbards.

I've substituted butternut squash for mashed sweet potatoes too. I think if you spiced it right, you could make a really nice pie. My favorite use for them is a gingered soup.

(Sometimes the best cooking comes from experimenting.)

my mom always used it for pie and it was great. They are just a real pain to peel. Have a very sharp knife and watch your fingers.

i tried like heck to grow the big ones -- woudlnt you know it the stupid squash bugs got them. i have a few more plants that just might fruit..and if we have a truly mild fall... could just work.
