Amen sister! Candy corn rocks!

Remember popcorn balls? There were two kinds, one made from caramel like your mom makes, and the other a pink sugar concoction. I liked both, and very often these homemade goodies would be handed out to kids on Halloween, wrapped in waxed paper. I recall my parents (and me) making one or the other version of these ubiquitous treats one year, but can't remember which variety.

well, last i looked i'm decidedly male... but sister in spirit is ok with me...

i conflated candy corn with popcorn balls, but i'm ok with either, but i do prefer the softer and chewy caramel popcorn that Mom makes. it's gooey and way too sweet and not hard to eat a whole bag at a time. she also makes her own caramel in the microwave and pours it on very thick. we always laugh because at times it looks like there is a lot more caramel than popcorn in the bags...

My daughter wanted to know how far back candy went. It turns out, candy goes all the back to ancient egypt. People would make candy by dipping fruits and such into honey.

For me, if Candy Corns can find their own self-value and contentment, more power to 'em.

Oops! Sorry about that, bro! I seem to have problems with gender identification on this forum. Thought BayMule was a guy for quite awhile til she posted a photo. I think perhaps because she takes on such monumental construction projects single-handedly.

i don't ever recall seeing that brand of bubble gum cigarettes, but i do remember buying the gold nugget kind of gum. even if i wasn't really much into chewing gum once in a while... i was weak for any form of sugar.

Looking at "retro" candy websites,  still offering these brands for sale!, I think I'm getting a glimpse of what I was missing in my youth. When, a bottle of RC Cola or Hires Rootbeer was a very big deal .

The nearest grocery store was several miles away. I can remember when it was being built and the next nearest was several miles further. Mom did a lot of shopping at healthfood stores in town. Transportation was in our 1950 Dodge or 1948 Oldsmobile before that. Dad had the pickup or Dodge flatbed for work .

Mom did a lot of baking and store-bought snacks were often a bag of salted mixed nuts or pretzels. But, all this talk of sweets makes me think about finishing the strudel bits on the kitchen counter !

i always got a lot of laughs out of Hogan's Heroes and Sgt Shultz's love of strudel, he was such a lovable character (for a concentration/POW camp...) and of course i too have a deep weakness for sweets and pastries.

I like to use candy corn at Halloween to put on top of cupcakes and then snack on a couple while I'm at it!
