Chickens for bug control and food recycling.

I have the barred rocks that are my favorite not much makes them skip
a day are the white a bird cousin :ya

The whites are a sport of the barred, but as different as night and day in many ways. There are also partridge rocks, black rocks, Columbian rocks, buff rocks, etc. Each have some quality of the original barred rocks but are also vastly different than the original in many ways. I do believe they all have the barred gene, so when you breed another bird with a barred gene with them, you'll get a barred bird.

I put on a new tarp this week as well...it's a clear tarp, though it looks white in this pic. It's clear with a white fiber woven within the tarp vinyl. Makes for a heavy duty tarp that lets in lots of light, which makes for a great winter time coop with plenty of sun and more warmth on cold winter days.

Also added the first leaves, to cap off all the garden debris I have in there that isn't breaking down as quickly as I'd like...that stuff is hard to flip, so covering it with leaves will hold in the moisture and speed that composting before really cold weather hits. Will be jacking up this coop this week to add more height to the front of it(it sits on a slope). Gives me more head room when the litter pack gets deep in the winter.

Ben helped by holding down plastic for me...

Chickens act like the leaves you put in the coop are much more interesting than those right outside on the ground.

If you have a coop that is a building with a wooden floor, consider using a bag of Equine Fresh spread out under the roosts next time you rebed. I put that in first, then add medium pine shavings, which, IMHO, work better for birds. I use fine pine shavings in my horse stalls. Also, if you are building take a hint from BYC and lay down vinyl flooring. We bought a DIY coop, I had a large piece of vinyl flooring that I laid down on the floor before putting up the walls. Makes cleaning up the floor MUCH easier.
ALSO, WARNING!!!! I recently saw that somebody is selling a plastic chicken coop. DON'T buy it!!! You NEED wood bc it breathes. Plastic and metal buildings are iceboxes in the winter and ovens in the summer AND, what is worse, they both hold in humidity. Chickens respire a LOT of water and it needs to evaporate in their shelter or else you will get them sick and lose them in the winter, especially. Just fyi, in case you are thinking about getting chickens. =D

Penny Jo, is that your coop? Where do you get fresh air flow and stale air out during the winter months in that setup?

Yes Bee it is my coop I run a exhaust fan most all the time but using deep litter
there was only one time I had a problem it is 17 ft in diameter and roughly 10 ft
tall in the center I max myself out at 20 birds but have stayed just below that
