Not out of this world expensive.
Middle DD's bought vanilla beans 3 years ago, and made infusions and gifted them.
I have to shake it up periodically.
Cooks recommend paste, too.

another 80F degree day
80! ... Low 60's?!

This is the warmest Winter I can remember ever – at least in terms of low temperatures. I did some checking. We haven't had the thermometer hit "low 60's" officially since the 21st of October.

Finishing my Corn Chex in the bowl on top of the chopped red d'Anjou pear. I probably peeled that a little early. Not especially ripe, so I microwaved it for a minute. It's okay, gonna wait another day or 2 for the next one.

Trying to imagine @flowerbug relying on 1 space heater and the oven while they wait for a furnace replacement in that Great Lakes environment, early February. I substituted in a little, cast-iron wood stove, sealing up a fireplace, at a previous residence. It's still in the garage, standing by. I am still wondering if I could carry it down the basement stairs if needed. Years ago, I bought the needed pipes and elbows to carry smoke out of the basement window. If needed.

But, it isn't 2 miles to the nearest hydroelectric generator in a dam. Remember when we learned how those generators worked? They don't need anything except some river water running through them. Shucks, if the utility company can't carry electricity a few thousand feet ...

DW didn't like propane barbecues so we gave that away. Nice, seldom used charcoal one in the garage. Still, I can't take things too far with only a bag of briquettes and a stack of old boards.

i had hot chocolate and homemade bread toast with plenty of butter for breakfast. now i want to take a nap since i've been up since about 4am. house is up to about 70F - it helps that the wind has calmed down and now the sun is coming out.

trying to make sure the house is warm before Mom has to get up. she was fine this morning. i got an extra blanket out for my room since it is about 5-10F different than the rest of the house. slept ok for at least part of the night so it will be an ok day. after furnace guy is here i'll get a nap in if i can...

someday i'll give it a try but i want different beans and a different flavor than what is considered your regular vanilla extract. i also don't want any off flavors from different boozes so i'll continue to be watching videos and reading up on that before i make any expensive mistakes. probably will get lower grade beans for the first efforts and see how that goes. but before any of this happens i just want to find a vanilla that i can be happy with to use for certain desserts that we really enjoy - they just won't be the same with a bland vanilla.

I make three different flavors of vanilla. Madagascar ( the one in the the stores mostly), Tahitian and Mexican. Use different ones for different recipes. I use a vodka base for all. I enjoy the different flavors and can use the beans after the vanilla gone as either vanilla sugar or grind and use in recipes.

I'll take some of those highs! It has been so cold here for the past week I don't even want to go outside for a walk! 20s at night, low 30s in the day!

OK, I Cook with cheapo wine, does the quality of the vodka make any difference?
