bay, did you buy your cone or make one? if you made it, how did you do that?
Since I was only doing a few roosters (9) I rolled up some cardboard, duct taped it all together and nailed it up. I processed all the roos and a couple days later, Parker the dog tore down the cardboard cone and shredded it all over the yard. If I raised CX and had a lot to do, I'd probably get a traffic cone.

Monty, I just popped the lungs out with my thumb. Thankfully I do not have "gross out" problems with things like that.

for a simple killing cone if you happen to have a big box hardware store nearby. look for an orange traffic cone and cut the top off so the chicken's head can go through the hole.
Someone on byc made theirs out of a gallon bleach bottle.

If you have any extra metal flashing lying around and a little scrap wood, you can make your own. I made mine myself (no help from hubby :D ) using a bleach bottle for a form, cut it out with a jigsaw w/ a metal cutting blade, rolled and hammered the edges over a little so it wouldn't be sharp, and mounted it onto a couple pieces of 2x4. Monty, you are crafty...you could definitely make your own and save some $$$.

I'm sure I'll come up with something. It's getting close now.

So close, you can almost taste 'em? :D

I've only got a couple packs of legs and thighs and one whole roaster left of the last batch I raised. I think I'll be back into the swing of things enough to raise another batch later this summer. I can almost taste 'em just talking about it. :drool

I don't know about tasting, but I sure can smell them! I took the first step towards that day, today. I have an old dryer that is bound for the recycle yard. After making a paper template, I used the grinder to cut a piece of steel out of one of the sides. Some filing, bending, and screwing together resulted in this:

I had an old 4x4 from an old mailbox that I replaced and a piece of treated 2x4 left over from the coop remodel to put it all together. At least I'll have a nice view while doing the deed. I'm considering attaching a beach unbrella to the post for some shade.

this is on my list to get pre arranged. dh says we have a traffic cone around somewhere. i'm going to look for that thing & see if it might work. i'm not particularly talented when it comes to cutting, sawing, etc.
I sure like your idea of the beach umbrella
