Corn Thread for 2014

well, the Glass gem has been doing ok here. it's gotten really tall and multiple ears on each stalk that has survived my dh taking down a tree that came through the middle of the patch and a mystery critter (probably raccoon) that had decided to feast on the first couple stalks once they got ripe enough for it's liking. those stalks that got knocked down are still growing sideways and producing more ears!

this is my first really successful year with getting corn to grow so i will keep this on my list as a keeper.

we already cut it up. it's now turned into a small pile of firewood. this was a small tree that just happened to have twisted as it came down. it was supposed to go in a completely different direction till it got caught on some other trees. at least the bigger maple we took down shortly after just missed taking out the rest of the patch and the cukes growing nearby.

i keep saying 'next year will be better for growing corn'. but i'm crossing my fingers nothing else happens this season.

Question, it's been a very, very mild summer here, never into 90s. Last week it shot up to 93F and humid all week. Corn leaves look like they do in the farmer's field when they are getting ready to harvest.
But is that why or is it the heat that caused it? They were planted late and never grew to full size. Have ears on them, I'll have to poke one to see if it's ready, but it'll really suck if they aren't and already drying up for winter...

Good to hear your Glass Gems doing well for you CMNH.

It got a late start this year and the cool summer on top of that it's not really a fair assessment. That being said it's still holding it's own.

So I've been leaving it alone. Field corn here is just starting to dry so we'll see where this goes.

I'm a little late to this thread, and my corn is all done now, but I can show a couple pics.

This was a really good year for my corn. I planted Silver Queen and Stowell's Evergreen sweet corn. I also planted some Rainbow Indian corn. The board in the pics is 8' long.

The 1st pic is Silver Queen, 2nd is Rainbow, 3rd is Stowell's

@freedhardwoods, how did your Stowell's Evergreen do? I planted mine late so it is just getting ready. I tried some ears for Labor Day, but they were still too young and had little flavor.

This year, my second corn variety is Blue Jade. What I tried last year was delicious, but I haven't taken any off yet as I'm waiting for all of it to dry. I only had enough seed for 13 plants this year and I plan for a lot more in next year's planting.

The Stowell's and Silver Queen both put out 2 or 3 ears per stalk. I had 3 harvests this year. The majority in each harvest would be ready in the first picking, but I would get 2 or 3 bucketfuls on the second and third week. I would say we averaged about 1 1/2 good ears per stalk.

I'm not a very good judge on flavor. I guess I'm not as picky as most people. My wife said the silver queen tasted better.

I had my wife cook a couple ears of the Rainbow corn to try even though it isn't a "sweet" variety. It was ok, but even I liked the actual sweet corn better.

Well, I thought I did, but I can't find it. I might have taken it and forgot to put it on my computer. That would be normal for me.
