I am the person who everyone dumps their old, unused furniture on. Just a quick mental scan through the house and I can only think of 2 pieces of furniture that I actually bought. :D
That being said - almost everything comes with a story or a memory - which is really cool. But, unless I want my home to look like the 'homegoods' section of goodwill, I take it as a personal challenge to try and make them all work together.
Some of the pieces are antiques that belonged to grandparents. I figure that their 'value' to the people who bought them was that they were functional and pretty... their 'value' to me is that someone I loved loved them - not what I could get for them. If I want to paint them, or recover them, or take the front off of them and show off their guts (piano) - and by doing these things it lets ME find them functional and pretty... then possibly one day someone that I love will love them too.

Cane, you articulated that very well. I think my grandma would be pleased to know that I have her old oak dresser that she refinished. It made it's way down to me several years after she died, but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't want me to keep it in it's given-to-me-state if I needed it to be changed.

Our house if filled with memorabilia. I have tried very hard to make things blend
but also have not repainted or repaired most when it comes to furniture I do try to
to blend textures covering to the two odd chairs with other fabrics, as both had cat damage
we have a large living room it has a love seat, a sofa and two smaller recliners..
I would be thrilled to take a photo later and post some of our more unique pieces.
