I always hated squash as a kid...I hated ALL vegetables, but now I realize its because it was never prepared right, and a LOT of it was commercially canned. Now we love it. I have 2 of each, yellow crookneck, zuchinni, pattypan, acorn and butternut. The winter squashes are great for taking up space and keeping the weeds down too, but I cube and freeze our squash, what we don't eat fresh. So much you can do with it!

Yellow crookneck is great with caramelized onions -- cook it down and serve with rice. I have blocks of that frozen for winter when it will be very nice to have the fresh taste of summer squash.

DH likes butternut squash soup, but I am not sure about my crop this year. The leaves all died so I harvested, then I looked at the tag and they were planted on May 10th. 65 days for butternut squash sounds... too early. I think it was just the squash bugs sucking the juice out of the stems. :(

Wendy, cut one open and see how it looks... It was a crazy season, maybe they were ready. Generally, the squash bugs won't kill the plant. The vine borers don't get into them because the stems aren't hollow.
