DS and DH just got the sunken room emptied out for cleaning and painting. Here is a better picture of the brick wall.

Here is one of the lights close up. I'm guessing that the patina stays and clean up consists of just a wash and dust?

First on the list here is to wash down the bricks and put Kilz on the leak spots. We had leaking so we replaced the chimney flashing -- no difference. We replaced the roof -- no difference. I was getting resigned to yearly spring leaking until I called the chimney guys. It seems the man who did our chimney used mortar instead of concrete to seal the top.

Over the years mortar broke down and allowed the leak you see on the wall. Now the chimneys are done properly and have the caps I'd always been asking DH to put on.

As for beams. I said I was promised a beamed ceiling when we built the house. DH said it was merely a suggestion, not a promise. DS, laying on the floor laughed and said he could see where wood was set into the joists to attach the beams (those leak spots). DH chuckled and relayed how he had put cross-boards in place to support the beams he said he didn't promise to install. Ha!
