One more idea. :D
I'm not sure if you can just slap this type of mantle on any type of fireplace opening ? But it would add size to your fireplace... then matching mantle shelves on your wood supports.
You could mount a large painting in the center, (or what is that black box thingy?)
I love the lights, yup, I would keep them.

I thought about bookshelves too, but full height, then I thought - who would want 14' bookshelves...

We put cedar beams on the ceiling in our kitchen addition because it was easier than a perfect sheet rock tape job ... :D

We have a fireplace mantle that DH bartered for many years ago. When we moved into the house the fireplace jutted about 3 feet into the room and was z bricked. We tore that out, Put the chase up the outside of the house and changed to gas burning fireplace. (currently not working, so that is why there is a trunk sitting in front of doors.) Maybe you could find something or have DS make one?

Not as tidy as yours, but if you look closely you can see there is a chest (under the CDs and bowl) in front of this fireplace as well -- DS's house.

Thought I had a better photo of the chest. I probably do, but can't find it.

OOO, I like that @Carol Dee , and the trunk, too!

We have a franklin fireplace that we should use more than we do.

I just dug my antique trunk out of my sewing room a few days ago, moved to the living room. It's been berried in there for years!

This thread is making me look at the hard earned paint job I did on our doublewide redneck mansion and thinking already about a repaint. I used one color throughout the house on the walls, one color for the ceilings and one color for the trim. We're not even moved in yet and I already want to start changing colors.......DH would kill me........
