Surprisingly enough, i actually like the current wall color in your living room. I usually go with COLOR in every room, but for some reason when looking at your picture, i couldn't come up with anything i would like better!

Red how do YOU want the room to look? If you want a rustic country feel then go with the beams. I would do something with your fireplace from photos firebox looks out of scale. Looks like a tiny firebox with whole wall of brick. I would add a much larger mantle over the firebox.

Contemporary or rustic, I tend to like the looks of a beamed ceiling. It breaks up that expanse of white and seems to tie a 'busy' wall into the room. Your eyes are still drawn to that wall but I think it has a more cozy feel.

I like the current color in the living room, I also like the dull blue grey idea (nice contrast with the azalea blossom)

Who here paints their ceiling same color of walls.
I have done that in a bathroom where I used a venetian plaster on the upper walls along with marble tile on the rest of the bathroom. The room is so small it seem like a good idea. I also have a guest room that had a textured ceiling. I hated it and spent many hours plastering over the entire ceiling to rid myself of it. I cannot remember why but the room is muted greens with sharp white trim. I put a matt coat of a very pale green on the ceiling. It probably is not noticeable to anyone else but I like how the light seems to glow between the wall and ceiling. I usually like a really bright white ceiling.

This is actually our living room. The ceilings aren't even 7' high. We have exterior columns inside...3 of them. And one huge support beam going down the middle.
Interesting to say the least.
