I'll be planting fruit trees this fall. We are still fighting briars, saplings, brush and poison oak.

Maybe you can find someone that would make jam, preserves or can fruit in jars, using your fruit and give you some of it.

My "surprise" apples off my unknown variety rootstock turned production trees were perfect. They got zero care, other than a deep watering or two in late summer. So it can definitely happen.

Thistle there is big money to be made on disease resistant apple trees. No care apple tree would be the holy grail for some fruit growers. If your trees keep producing for several seasons without spraying you might want to look in to it.
