You can add a grape leaf too, though if you cut the blossom end off, Im not sure it helps. That blossom end is supposed to have something in it that can cause them to go soft. A grape leaf is supposed to have an enzyme that counters that.

I both cut it off and add a grape leaf. I have not tried the pickle crisp but bought some to try this year. I do either whole pickles or spears, no slices for the dills, and have not been real happy with the results. They taste fine but are not as crisp as Id like. Maybe the pickle crisp will make a difference.
In one book it says that pickling salt makes them crisp and in another it says to use pickle crisp and in another it says that pickle crisp is made from salt.... SO - since I can't find pickle crisp... can I use pickling salt to crisp pickles??????

Cane, you can but I dont know how it will turn out. Pickle Crisp is Calcium Chloride. Salt is Sodium Chloride.

Salt might make them crisp, I dont know, but it might also make them taste salty. Personally I wouldnt.

I wonder if you could soak them in pickling lime like the sweet pickles I make? Anybody want to try and report back here?

I'm trying a fermented method this year, Bay. It removes the need to water bath, but takes several weeks for the process.

Ahh - THAT's the bit I must've missed. So where are yall finding pickle crisp? Guess I need to try another grocery store. There is nothing but FoodLion near me... I see a trip to the dreaded and terrible Wallyworld in my near future.

They'll have it at Walmart though I'd think Food Lion should have it. Have you asked or just looked for yourself? I got mine from a local Harp's grocery in with the canning supplies. Its white and in a small jar maybe 3 diameter and 2 to 3 tall.

I've looked all over F L. With the vinegar, with the spices, with the canning supplies .. which are over next to the cards and magazines(???). Our Tractor Supply should be open sometime in August so that will help later. I'm still in NEED of a new camera, so off to Wallyworld I go. (hate that place.. :tongue ) Only thing good about is that it's near Sonic and I get to get a Route44 Cherrylimeaid for the long ride home.
