That is a good question. The FAA says: if you can not see your drone you are probably above 400 feet. For me, I estimate the lenght of a football field and stay well below that, probably between 250 and 300 feet. For photography I don't feel it necessary to go any higher. And, I rarely spend a lot of time in the air. I decide what to photograph, lift off with the camera taking photos every five seconds, and in the direction I want to photograph. When at altitude, I hover, perform a piroutte slightly left and to right and bring it down slowly and capture it in my hand.

The FAA considers them UAS, or unmanned aerial systems weighing under 55 pounds. So the guide of if you can not see it, it is probably above 400 feet is probably accurate.

Most people who operate them have over a thousand dollars invested in equipment and are responsible. Like anything else, there are a minority that will abuse them.

I am registered at site that has photos taken by drone pilots all over the world. Some of them are fantastic, some pilots have photographed industries polluting the environment and turned the photos over to their local authorities.

If interested in drone photos of exotic places the site is: http://www.dronestagr.am/

This photo was taken recently at an altitude of between 250 and 300 feet. It is high enough for my purposes.

Jack- How much do you have to spend to get a good quality photo? I would love to take photos of my daylilies from above.

There are some small inexpensive quadcopters with HD cameras that take video. You can capture any frame in the video to be used as a still if you have the software to do it. Search eBay for quadcopters to see some examples, but look for HD cameras. You don't have to register quadcopters, they are under the weight limit, so there is no hassle. There are all kinds of them on the market now and the prices are coming down.

jackb, I was just at the gym and a friend was all excited because he had just purchased a drone. He was like a kid at the candy store. I told him all about you and your drone. :)

Sure are some interesting pics on that site.
There sure are, I was amazed at the number of people flying drones around the world. I thought it was just us silly Americans. A lot of countries are ahead of us, using them to get medical supplies to remote locations.

My TV weatherman buddy Steve wants one for Christmas, badly. I just wrote him about how to register it and received this reply.
"I was looking at them and got the big NO……..She said you have to be good….maybe for your Birthday."
I am betting one will under the tree though. ;)

Tell your friend to check out the http://www.dronestagr.am/ site, that will really get him excited.
