I think when I dig up my two beds flanking my front door walkway towards the street, I will consider this by adding some bulbs that will come up later than my tulips and daffodils.
I actually planted 5 potatoes, one that had sprouted last month, cut into 4 pieces, growth resembling Romanesco Cauliflower, in a "self watering pot", 1/2 that I had purchased last winter that has a place to water low from the outside. I put it next to the west facing window in the basement, cool, but cave temperature, no drafts there. I like This article

that shows growing potatoes in paint buckets, same I use for carrying in the winter for my ponies shows putting a plastic bag over the opening, which is what I was thinking about doing today. You have to treat them like crystal or they will crack, BUT, once they Do crack, you can grow in them, like potatoes! I have a cracked bucket waiting by the barn for Just this purpose.
I thought to plant potatoes when DD gave me a 10 pound bag and darn it! every potato save 2 of them had sprouted in the bag.
Pointless to eat them...
As I work my gardening in among the other winter chores, I hope to plant the other "self watering pot" (both black,) 2 teal planters and one terra cotta colored ALL plastic, and those three have drainage holes that I made a few years ago.
Dunno WHY places sell pots without them.

Here is how to grow potatoes in a cardboard box.
I figure to put all potato pots outside on the west side of the house cement porch around my picnic table mid May, after all frosts. They will be 2months/4months along. Like harvesting carrots, it's easy to puncture potatoes, so I look forward to simply pouring the contents out in a garden bed to harvest, then Probably replant.
