When I first visited Mom's childhood home in Oregon the house was still standing, the barn was still standing, and the spring house was still standing.

The outline of a Large Garden was still there, downhill from the spring house. She told me that all water for the garden was carried there in buckets.

It seemed like a pleasant little place. There was a door and room to go in. The pool of water wasn't very deep and overflowing during Summer visits.

Steve
within a few years, the house was taken down. remarkably, beneath the house the ground between the foundation walls was littered with blue glass Vicks Vapo-Rub bottles. they were many miles from the nearest doctor and there were 9 kids in the family ;).

DH Told me that the water would go down, and it did. 5 ft. He said, the cistern is brick lined, and the water will fill in where the underground soil has dried out. Still, I will be watering with it.
What was surPRISING was how much water we took Out of the Other cistern, the one that hadn't been drained since, like 2002. It started about 7 ft down. When we were done it looks to be about 15 ft down, but I didn't measure.
I really thought (hoped) that we wouldn't even make a dent in it.
Guess I will be periodically checking both of them to see the water levels.
I am Seriously considering getting rain barrels!
I would have to put up gutters on the garage, but 2 on the house would help.

Good news! We had a little downpour yesterday. Rain predicted 4 PM today, some overnight, some for the next 4 days.
Bad news--a vine borer got to my one zucchini! :hit
I should have taken a picture before I squished it, but the plant was too far gone. Btw, they measure an inch long and are WHITE AND EVIL!!!!
Don't be surprised if I tell you that I have planted a few more zucchini seeds today.
Finally mowed yesterday morning. Boy, the 5 ft diameter mower deck on the tractor makes it SO much faster.
