That's when you turn altruistic, give it to neighbor's so there is no extra..... My 80+ year old neighbor shuts and locks her door when she sees me coming.....not really but I call to see if she would take a mess and my wife then sends enough to can...... It's now neighborhood joke.

@thistlebloom you would really appreciate your own garden produce in the dead of winter, when you could open a jar, get a bag from the freezer or incorporate something you dehydrated into what you are cooking. I love having my own food that I grew. We have terribly missed our garden and are so grateful to be getting anything at all. It just tastes so much better.

Oh I do! But I don't use everything. I'm a salsa addict and that's an easy product to make. Our potatoes last all winter (except for last seasons debacle) .
It just seems that when everything comes on is when I have the least amount of time and spare energy to devote to dealing with it. Not to mention the necessary creative brain cells.

Seed, that's funny about your neighbor. Maybe it's not just the excess vegetables you know. Haha.

Unfortunately we have a full generation-maybe 2-3-that don't enjoy fresh produce as they are used to prepared foods. Then throw in the effort it takes to garden. My wife would be exhibit A. She enjoys fresh produce just much easier to buy in store...... Oh the burdens I must bear...
I know what you mean. My husbands says for the amount of water, work, and supplies to garden with, that I could buy it cheaper at Whole Foods.

i'm with seed my gardens are my way to relax after dealing with work and yes i find enjoyment fulfillment knowing everything that is harvested is fresh. one of the best things having a garden is that you have a chance to grow so many types of veggies that the supermarkets does not offer and if they do it costs the same as a packet of seeds. yes there are some produce that we do buy since it's cheaper to buy than grow potatoes, onions, celery, cabbage etc. now if we had a root-cellar would probability grow them <water table is too high here on the property to build one>.

and yes all the excess <yes i grow more than we can eat and put away> we just give to our friends ....

@ninnymary i gave up years ago keeping up with how much is spent thought out the 4 seasons...

since it's raining again, had a little time on my hands went to google map how about that it's been update, it shows my gardens late september of last year.
anyway there was mention of gardens being a necessity to eat a few decades ago. as we the world now have internet, i phones, x box mortgage on the house where it take both parents to work full time jobs. supermarket and fast food with in miles of the house and if their really tired , can have it delivered....

gardening has skipped a generation or two for sure. when friends come by and say what a wonderful garden we have, will mention to them i could come by and turn some soil for them or help build some raised beds....no we dont have time or we will think about it. of course we will ask if they want something from the gardens, as always heck yes.. will chuckle to myself...

anyway back to the map scrolled around about a mile and only found 5 gardens, lost track of all the swimming pools.. guess it easier to go to the store and buy gassed, unripe fruit and veggies, if people would just grow a couple things they would find time...

thats why i love to garden because we can grow some many more different types, than the domesticated produce section offers at the supermarket. guess people think carrots are only orange....

thats my 2 cents worth....

I'm of a mind that everyone that has a patch of dirt, or if only have space for a container or two or a window box, should grow something edible. Heaven perish the thought but there may come a time for whatever reason we will have to grow our own and if we don't know the ins and outs of growing we'll be up the creek without a paddle. Another reason for saving your own seed. There may come a time when you won't be able to buy it.

Thinking back to the second world war, we weren't too bad off this side of the pond, some things were rationed but it was a pretty tough time for the Brits, they were plowing up every available bit of ground to grow vegetables, it's a good job they knew how to grow things.
I know this is a bit of doom and gloom but even if vegetables, especially storage vegetables are not grown now everyone at least should know how to do it. How many of the younger generation do, scary thought.

here i was babbling earlier about people not wanting garden, you all have seen the gardens here, our children helped a couple times over the years, now they out of school/collage both have jobs both live here. both will not go out to the gardens and pick anything to eat, they would rather eat junk food or drive and get fast food.. now if we pick it and prepare it they will eat it... go figure...
