Did we have hurt feelings?

Not here, not me. What's to hurt? This place is just too much fun!

I only recently noticed the "EXPERT" heading (should'a read more carefully before) and realized the topic was not one I should'a been writing answers for.

What about those that know Jack? (and i'm not talkin bout JackB!)

JackB? :hu I know JackD and JackA and JackS and even Jack in the Bean Stalk, but who's JackB? Hum-m-m I guess we can guess someone who doesn't know Jack.

***edited below***
Oops, Please excuse me and pass the scalpel, JackB. Guess I do know Jack.

That is a good name for them Thistle.

I'm with Journey, moderation & as close to natural as I can get it.

I firmly believe that we have a few problems overall. One is the expectation for cheap food. Another is portion control, and the last is a more sedentary lifestyle.

Trying to get the most money for something corners get cut. Fillers get added & quality goes down. That's why we see the high sodium content that was reported in chicken. We've become so used to being able to buy what we want & have it be affordable what can we expect? I don't advocate raising prices however you get what you pay for.

Portion control is another MAJOR issue. Look at this video for the Chicken Of Tomorrow Contest to see how birds used go be in the 1940's. It's astonishing how portions have gotten so far out of hand. I'm not one of those people who needs a meat, a veg, & a starch. Two of the three is fine with me. Seriously when we go out to eat Ill order sides that reheat well or eat good cold as leftovers because I know I don't need to eat all that. Sure Ill have the baked potato as one of my choices for a side along with salad but that potato is tomorrow's lunch. Serve it with some fruit or a veg & it's another meal. Yes I can eat an 8-12oz steak, plus salad, bread, & a potato but I don't need to. That steak, a piece of bread & salad & Im comfortable. We're raising our daughters the same way. Eat till your not hungry. Simple as that. You don't need to stuff yourself because we put too much on your plate. There is always more don't be a hog come back for 2nds.

The other problem is we're too sedentary. Not enough people just moving. Everybody is sitting behind desks or watching how many hours of TV? Or surfing the net? Or playing video games? Get up & do something.

I'm by no means perfect but I see how people act & eat & it just blows my mind. I think if people tried a little harder realized a little more work can yield a significantly better & healthier results.

If you have every seen the program that features the coupon queens that get a thousand dollars worth of food for $17.00 you will notice most are very overweight. All of the packaged crap that they eat for free is too much food, high in fat calories and low in nutrition. Our farm subsidies contribute to the worst foods being very cheap.

Hey Jared, that was Lowell Thomas -- "So long, until tomorrow!"

So Cat', you are saying the clipping coupons isn't very good exercise?

DW wanted to know if I wanted to stop at the park and take a walk with Garbanzo yesterday afternoon. I'm terrible! This would be the perfect winter for me to be out pounding the pavement!

The USDA has now made it real easy to calculate calorie intake on their nutrient database (link).

If this lethargy goes on much longer I am gonna need a nagging thread just to get off top dead center! I've got a pdf booklet from Cornell called, appropriately, "Just Move!" Imma printing that out and carrying it out of this south window. At least, I'll get that much exercise and it will add to the calories I burn driving around or carrying my banana peel out to the compost bucket . . .

Seriously i.e. lethargy. Start by parking in the last space in a parking lot instead of looking for the closest space. Walk a block down the road and add 50 feet the next day and the one after that…..

Seriously? At Lowe's?

I do show up quite often at a pharmacy - wife's. (There are no wine or chocolates. :/) Cat's, the parking there is terrible and I am up there about every 10 days. I park right at 5 blocks away. No I'm not kidding!

I walk with a cane if it is any distance and do not have one of those parking passes! It is part of my little life's statement for folks to see me limping thru the lot while some fight for the closest space.

I try to set a good example (and pretend that someone actually notices. ;))

Steve
who did 4 each of the 1st 7 Cornell exercises. okay, so 4 pushups don't amount to anything! off to that pharmacy soon.

When I was newlywed (and we were dirt poor!) I started out couponing to try to save money. My MIL used to be really good at it and she told me all her tips. We'd stop by the recycle center and look for bundles of the Sunday paper so we could get all of the coupon fliers out of them (and use the newspapers for mulch. ;) ) Sure you can bring home lots of stuff for cheap (and even now, it doesn't work like it used to), but it's all boxed, cans and pre-packaged. You're not going to find coupons for veggies, cuts of meat or most of the stuff that is in the outer perimeter of the store. You're not going to find coupons for whole foods. That's a lot of what got me earnestly into gardening (beyond growing a few tomatoes or summer squash) and canning and chickens. We got tired of eating so many Hot Pockets. LOL
