Fall/Winter Gardens in the south

Anyone started yet? My garden is tilled, I have my seeds, I've consulted my Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide and it's so stinkin' hot here, you'll probably find me face first in the dirt from heat stroke! :rolleyes:

I *tried* to start it. I sowed broccoli in the middle of July, half of it is growing pretty well, but is being eaten by something. I'll have to spray it tomorrow. Though I think what did grow is looking good.

I sowed some brussel sprouts that started to do well in July but when the heat came back in August, they slowed down to nothin. I mean, they're still there, but they seemed to have stopped growing. In the hot sun, I cover them with a white sheet.

Only a few of the Cauliflower germinated. That was planted at the end of July. I'll need to do more.

My fava beans and snap peas did super well in July, but now they're starting to burn :/

I just sowed some broccoli raab and spinach this past weekend. We'll see. The calendar says it's time but God didn't read that book, so I might have to sow them again next month.

I think I'm going to start some broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts inside and then move them out when it starts getting cooler....

I'm having the best luck with the Buttercrunch lettuce from Burpee.

Anyone else?

I planted brocolli, b/sprouts, cali. and corn last week. So far nothing has broke ground. Really don't know if there's enough time for the corn to do anything, but a person can hope!!!

People say I'm getting crankier as I get older. That's not it. I just find I enjoy annoying people a lot more now. Especially younger people!!!

I have started. I'm keeping it simple and just planting Southern "traditionals" outdoors:

Collards... "Georgia"
Mustards... "Red Leaf" and "Large Curled Leaf"
Turnips... "Red Top"
Radishes... "Sparkler"

I'm pulling the last of the melons this weekend, doing some clean up and replanting with these.

In my little greenhouse:

Saladings... Lettuces - "Red Leaf", "Bibb" and "Red Leaf Cos"
Carrots... "Nantes"
Radishes... "Red Globe"
Spinach... "Winter Giant" and "Savoy"
Cabbage... "Savoy Express"

This greenhouse is really a mobile chicken coop that I will just cover with plastic. It is 4 x 10 and big enough to stand up in, so should be big enough for my needs. Im moving it from the old chicken yard to its new rotation this weekend. Next spring, it will go back to being a chicken coop.

I planted some peas and carrots a few days ago.

I - admittedly - have no idea what I'm doing so whether or not anything will wind up on the table remains to be seen.

Oh, don't feel bad, I don't know what I'm doing either! My garden guide says I should have planted some things a couple of weeks ago, but IMO it's too hot and I don't remember our frost date being at the end of October - I remember more like January!. :idunno

All of my seeds for fall planting are southern reliables and I plan on doing the same in the spring. I found a tomato called "Creole" and it's an heirloom that was developed in Louisiana for hot humid climates. I can't wait to try this one out! I'm going to call my friend at the feed store and see if he can order it for me.

Oh goody, another tomato variety to try! I gotta get some....

Do a google search they's plenny of 'um...

It is still really, really hot here too. And frost? Ohhhh.... you mean those two mornings a year when the grass sparkles a bit!

I hadn't planned on planting anything else, but my squash plants got majorly attacked by some squash bugs and died. I didn't know what they were. (One of the many bits of knowledge I lack.) I'll know next year. :lol:

Right now in my garden I have winter squash are doing great. I planted them Mid July in hopes they would be ready by frost. I also have a couple of cherry tomatoes that I hoped would be able to transplant for a second harvest but it was too freakin hot and they dried up and died. These were really big transplants that I got from a nursery not some delicate sprout. I thought for sure they would make it. I tried to set some collard greens the last couple of weeks but I just cant keep up with the watering. they just sprout and die. It is too freakin hot. I will probably wait a good couple of weeks before I attempt any greens like spinach and lettuce.
On a bright note my jalapeno peppers are doing really good and producing a good handful every couple of days (two plants). I really wish I hadn't removed my first season tomatoes. I bet they would have come back into production right about now.
