GMO (whatever that is??? Genetically Modified something, I'm assuming. :hu ) vs. heritage, I don't really care. What I do find objectionable is the patenting of a seed, especially one that makes it more likely that you will sell more of another of your products! (In the case sited, Roundup.) A seed, by definition can be used to produce more seeds, and it doesn't care who plants it.

Yes a large corporation did spend a lot of money to "develop" this product, but they had an ulterior motive. PROFIT! Now don't misunderstand me, please. I have no problem with a business showing a profit. That's how they stay in business. My problem comes when they use the courts to improve their bottom line instead of building a better mouse trap.

Question: Why didn't Monsanto alter the seed to cause it to be sterile, than the problem of reusing it wouldn't have come up? The answer, in my opinion is that it's more profitable to sue people, and it makes it cheaper for them to produce next years supply.

Sidebar-
Did you know that if you sing the Happy Birthday song in a restaurant you've violated copyright laws? You should have paid money to the company that owns the copyright, not the author. Do you know who it is that you're going to bankrupt by not paying the fee? Look it up for yourself. I already know who's being "cheated" out of their just due.

Yes, I know that the above has nothing to do with the topic at hand. I just thought it was an interesting comment on how ridiculous patent and copyright laws have gotten. :th

Organic Farmers Slam GMO-Friendly USDA Report

Report leaves burden of GMO contamination with 'victim;' 'fails to address the root cause of the problem -- transgenic contamination,' say groups

https://www.commondreams.org/headline/2012/11/21-4 Make sure you read the comments at the bottom of the article. Some are from around the world. People think that Americans are really stupid for accepting this technology without complaint. Are they right?

"Each pig contains genes from mice and E. coli bacteria which have been inserted into their DNA." Oh.....yummy!

Let's take a philosophical break...

Many years ago, when I was just a little lad in my formative years a very fine gentleman by the name of Rev. Davis pointed out a fact of life that has stuck with me through the years. In essence, he said, "No one wants to make illegal those things that he wants to do." He said it much more eloquently, but that's the general concept. My point is that one should always take into consideration the reasoning behind a person being for or against something.

In the case sited above organic farmers are against genetically modified organisms. Well, that's a big surprise isn't it? I once knew a fellow who was the late night shift nurse at a nursing home. Having a lot of time on his hands he took to reading the little brochures that came with the medications. He was amazed that under Possible Adverse Reactions many listed "Unexpected Death" and these were not experimental drugs, but mainstream, commonly available and used medications. Benefit vs. dangers.

Are large corporations evil? Historically, evil is a subjective term. The Spanish Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, The Women's Christian Temperance Union, The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, AL-Qaeda and Hezbollah come immediately to mind. None of these actions/groups, in their own mind were/are evil. They think or thought they were doing "God's will". There was another group, but many would get upset if I were to mention the German National Socialist Party. They just thought they were improving the world no matter what God thought. No one wants to think of themselves as evil.

To sum up and put us back on topic; GMO's, good or bad? Like electricity, the telephone, non-organic fertilizer, the automobile, and the disc plow, just to name a few only time will tell. Benefit vs. danger. Some embrace new ideas, others are frightened by them. I suppose it depends on whether you're a merry-go-round person or a roller coaster person.

Personally, I like both. :)

Lady, Turn on your TV to some PBS documentaries ( culture shock ) where they show people in India purposely going out into their fields to catch RATS, then roasting them whole with their fur, skin and guts still on and in the carcass ... then gasp :ep ... eating them. Or the South American natives of the Amazon gathering GRUBS then roasting them ... then gasp :ep ... eating them. Or some fancy restaurants in France where the chefs actually cooking SNAILS ... then gasp :ep ... their restaurant diners actually eating them. How about a documentary of a company in the good old USA actually covering ANTS, GRASSHOPPERS, CRICKETS, etc. with chocolate and ... gasp :ep ... eating them as well as selling them. ( There are quite a few more, but these will suffice for now! ) :th Oh .... Yuuuummmmy ! :idunno

With a large percentage of the population obese or overweight, and warnings about diabetics amongst other diseases, after some reflections maybe we should be addressing our food supply.

Round-up permeating the land. How soon most have forgotten DDT. Will GMO's be the same?

Maybe we should be addressing world population growth, instead of adding to the food supply.

These are all issues that have to be threshed out.

so lucky said:
Hey, bobm, at least the grubs, crickets and rats are natural! :D
Kinda depends on what they ate, doesn't it? Cheap hot dogs come immediately to mind.

Anyway, back to the original topic, "Farmers Told To Buy Insurance..." The question that I have is; who is suggesting this? Eleven farmers per year out of the millions of farmers around the world seems like better odds than the lottery to me. Sounds like the big insurance companies may have a hand in this. :rant

Isn't Mother Nature, who is all natural, just wonderful ? She always has and still uses all types of chemical soups in water and earth as well as radiation from the sun and localized radiation from radio active chemicals, lightning ( electricity) , metiorites, backeria, viruses, etc. in her experiments in animal and plant mutations. There are so many of her countless failures as evidenced in extinct species that she tried over the eons of time as well as her many successes. Mankind is just one of her experiments that just happens to have an inquiring mind that eventualy led to mankind coping her methods. :idunno
