Finally got my hands on some, and added to my garden and house plants. The good news, all the plants seem very happy to have had this added to their diet. The bad news...I have never smelled anything quite this aweful!!!!! Not just fishy, but more fishy in a dirty sweat sock with some rotten eggs thrown in for good measure. Blech!!!!:p

This better be worth it!!;)

There can't be too much said about pleasant smells in this particular forum.

I mean, blood meal, bat guano . . . Steamed bone meal almost smells . . . well, I don't like it :(!

Alaska brand fish emulsion doesn't smell toooo bad. Kinda like the rocks at low tide . . . only worse :/.

Did you buy an "off" brand, DesertGirl? Alaska claims to be "deodorized."

(All fertilizers make me better appreciate a nice clean cover crop of winter rye ;).)

No, I followed your sage advice (although it took me awhile to get my hands on it!) and got the Alaska brand.

If that is deodorized, I'd hate to experience the emulsion "full monty"!!!:sick

But, now you have me intrigued about other smelly things!!!!!

Darn you, digitS'!!:barnie

;)

I use fish emulsion too and boy it is nasty. But lately the duck poo water I use from my ducks isn't too lovely either. Should we keep posting about the nastiest garden smells ;-)

Funky is how, I guess, I'd describe steamed bone meal. It could almost make a vegetarian out of me again.

Your fish emulsion is a foliar fertilizer so you shouldn't have to handle it much at full strength. They've got a new hose-end sprayer that I'm real excited about :p.

I once thought I'd do all my tomatoes, at least, with fish emulsion and since I put in more than 50 each year - a rainbird sprinkler could cover the lot of them. So, I bought a siphon valve and dropped the tube into the emulsion. That didn't work . . . neither did diluting the liquid some with H2O :/.
Using the stuff in a MiracleGro bottle didn't work. Using it in an Ortho hose-end sprayer didn't work . . . . :he
You know how many 2 gallon sprinkler cans you gotta fill and "sprinkle" to cover 60 or so large tomato plants :barnie??

Oh gosh Steve!!! That's where I draw the line..... Not being able to do anything any other way but HAND when I have so much to take care of is ridiculous!!! 50+ plants needed that all by hand. I'm grateful I only have 12 tomato plants this year.

However.... I pour the duck poo water over my plants... and I can tell you now... they LOVE it, and I GAG! Oh my, I start doing the little vomit cough... my husband REFUSES to do it. He thinks I'm crazy to bother since I'm so smell sensitive. But I will do anything to keep my plants looking as good as they do. :D

I'm getting ready to just scoop some water out of the pond to finish everyone off in the pots on the deck real soon. That should give them all a little boost. ;) With how much it rained this week... no one should need water or fertilizer any time soon. So I can enjoy the lovely smells of the flowers for once!!!!!

I can only imagine!

On a positive note, though-

it rained last night, and this morning when I went out to check on everything it smelled like the ocean! Not a bad smell, for a desert dweller.:love

I was thinking about putting some goldfish in my rain barrels. Supposedly they keep the bugs down, and, they release emulsions.

Smells like the ocean... strange.

I read something about that too andy!!! I can't remember who told me they did that. Goldfish are cheap... just get the feeders from the pet store or petsmart or walmart...
