I thump it upside down on the kitchen counter once or twice and it usually opens. That or my 15 year old son likes to show off how strong he is and will open it.

I agree Alex. Sexist, and totally inappropriate in todays world. And if you look back, only two women in this thread said they hand it to a male.

I use the hot water method. I canned chicken broth Saturday and when I took the rings off I had to resort to the hot water method on several of them. It's just not worth a hernia.

I don't have a male I can hand it to. Or not one old enough to be stronger than me anyway, DS is young still. I cuss it open instead. Good to know about the beating method, I'll try that sometime

Well I only hand it to my son because when he sees I can't open it, he will grab it before I can thump the jar on the cabinet because he likes to show off how strong he is. Boys that are 15 love to show off their muscles.

Personally, I like the multi-jawed 'pliers' opener, works for most bottles and jars. Doesn't need batteries, or much in the way of muscles... usually. I swear that some of those lids are glued on.
