We were just where you are now, last year. We had our land logged off and what a MESS was left! Then we had a drought, the worst one in 60 years and couldn't do anything but look at the mess. Finally we got rain this winter and a neighbor accross the road got a bulldozer! HELLLLOOOOO!!!!! NEIGHBOR!!!!!! Instead of an orchard, we want pasture.

Jared, I wish we knew someone that has a large chipper. We would most definately barter. I like your idea of taking the money from the scrap and putting it into the trees! We have someone that has offered up an excavator in the pas to dig the stumps out. We dont want to use a dozer or creeper as the soil is good and don't want to lose any more than neccessary. We'll see if that pans out.

baymule, I can imagine looking at the mess made it seem like you were waiting forever! It looks like you have it all under control now though. That is going to be beautiful pasture when you get it done!

You would be surprised at the large stumps we have removed with just chains, and our old tractor.

When our land was logged they had a chipper for the unusable timber. The chips were sold to an energy plant. This was one of the reasons the work was done for free.

I wish chains and a tractor would do it lesa. We just have so many stumps and rocks, boulders, boulder, rocks and more boulders. That's what we get for living on a mountain I guess! ;)

catjac, that totally makes sense that the work would be done for "free" as the chips were the payment. Wood chips are such a valuable thing for a garden, I don't want to part with any. They allow the soil to hold in the moisture so that you don't have to water, keep out the weeds as the weed seeds just settle on the top and because you are not watering, they blow off and go somewhere else. The chips turn into nutrient dense soil eventually and while all that is going on, it stays light and doesn't compact like our regular soil. One pile of manure and one pile of wood chips and I'm a happy girl!

What if it was someone you didn't know? Id go ahead and put up your offer on Craigslist and other resources. Put up the service your after and what your willing to offer in trade. See if someone will take you up on it. Worst thing that happens is you end up buying the chipper like you plan on currently. Best of luck to you and please keep us posted!

Well we did it! This is currently what part of our property looks like now. It will be the future pasture and orchard will go somewhere.

Right straight ahead of my shadow in the picture, there is a large Oak. That is roughly where the previous pictures were taken before.

It would have been very difficult to do with a chain saw and manual labor. So, we dicided to hire a logging company and they used these. As a wonderful side note, I did ask them to leave me a big pile of wood chips when they are done. :D We had roughly 7-8 acres cleared including trails through the woods.

Wow! Nicely done, very impressive. How much land do you have? That will make a wonderful pasture...
