#1 - If there are other people on other planets why don't they contact us?

#2 - Would you?
If "they" monitor our broadcasts, probably not. As much as the media has been discussing viruses lately, we would look to "them" like the galactic version of Typhoid Mary. That's not all bad though... it might make "them" think twice about stealing our water.

I want to point out a time in history when this modern invention of radio communication was absolutely dominant. There was an asshole by the name of Orson Wells that took advantage of this single source of data and used it for a privateering and possibly profitable purpose. This was 1938. He scared the bejesus out of people who gave weight to the channel by which they got their information. Today, the same joke would be believing NBC news and a few other ardent distributors of "percieved" facts.

if they want water they can have the stuff already in space and save themselves a lot of the risks of infections along with saving a ton of energy having to lift all that weight.

if you like old science fiction there is a series of books that talk about Martians stealing our atmosphere is part of the series of small books by D.F.Jones about a big computer and then eventually the Martians. :) i had four books in my old collection when i sold them off and now i have three of the four and went to find out what the missing book might be called and the wiki says there were only three. hmm... i'm too lazy at the moment to get up and get those books off the shelf... i saw them by chance at a used book store many years later and snagged them immediately. some day i'll read them again. i always like computer AI stories.

but back to biology. understand this about humans, we are the great innoculators and by going to space we are doing our job. to spread life in all its forms. it will be found out eventually that for mankind to do well in space we'll have to take a large portion of our biological diversity with us from this planet. from what i continually see and as i learn more. the big questions all remain yet, but i'm hopeful we'll figure out how to do this. or perhaps we'll change forms to mechanical/electrical, but then i'm sure that most people would no longer consider us humans. anyways in the short term figuring out what kind of minimal system we need to survive is important. alas, Biosphere II was not really kept going as a pure research project of an enclosed space. interesting to read about though, including what went wrong... you learn a lot from such things, even the failures.

OK, here's the "cosmic humor". After making the post about aliens not stealing our water, I sat down with DW to watch TV for awhile... and what movie does she put on? Oblivion - where an alien AI is stealing our water.
