Herbs do not do well here I have found out... but I do know we did some research and of all the orchards in this area, you'd have to drive 2 hours to find an apple orchard.

Most peaches come from SC, even though the weather her is perfect.

I would like to have some land for a small orchard of apples & pears.

Even though we only have an area, I think we could end up doing a lot more by creating the 'production' food. Once I transform the fruit from fresh to preserve, its worth 3x as much.

Hopefully the shop will be open next year, if all the plans go well, and we'll be able to supply quite a bit of our own needs... the rest from local farms.

And again, we've learned from local small farms that haven't a great many things available gets more out of their land, and the land heals faster... The tobacco farms have been disappearing here recently, and I've noticed more cows & sunflowers popping up where tobacco used to be. :)

The two commercial crops that make the land poor faster than any others are tobacco and cotton with corn a close third, especially if they are cropped over and over on the same land.
