Now, @ninnymary, couldn't those nice people at the IRS also be avid gardeners? I never would have thought an agent with a government agency -- such as the IRS -- would need to disguise himself as a gardener in order to engage in friendly social interaction with such honest taxpayers as ourselves.

For shame, @bobm! I, for one, never gave it a thought that @Nyboy would 'forget' to include his barter deal as income. Gardeners are some of the best-est, most honest taxpayers I've met.

(tongue out of cheek):@Nyboy! Great deal! I am happy that you've gotten Grandmother's precious things out of the attic and into daily use. Grandmother would never have wanted her things untouched and unused, but used and loved as she did.

I really do envy those of you with connections to past family members through flowers, furniture, tools, etc. My father's sisters got everything from his parents and my mother's sisters (Mom was estranged) did the same. Besides, Mom didn't believe in keeping old things -- junk -- when new items were available to buy.

Perhaps I should go to auctions and make up family stories about the treasures I pick up there.

OT: They are working on the last of 5 bore holes and should be done with the drilling just after noon today. The contractor said it would take another 7 days or so to get everything hooked up for the system to be up and running. Subtracting the weekends and counting down another 7 days (plus a few "or so" days) to be warm and cozy thanks to Mother Earth.

NO , I am NOT an agent of the IRS, however, I am a dyed in the wool honest avid gardener ! My wife is a very good , honest one though ( she is an auditor of businesses and will be in Indiana for the next month as an instructor for the IRS new hires ) , so I get to hear what is going on. Therefore, I just post a friendly reminder from time to time of a few little gems that some people may not be aware of so that they don't have to endure an audit just for a slight unawareness ( one's good CPA should be aware of all rules and regulations ... one would be surprised of how many CPAs prepare taxes on "garbage in , garbage out" method especially those that promise to get you a huge tax refund money and the tax payers get stuck with an audit ) by the honest gardeners here. :caf

Just teasing a bit, bobm. I've known about the rules regarding barter for so many years that it's sometimes hard to remember that others might not know.

My daughter -- also NOT an agent of the IRS (although I'd love her just the same if she were) -- is often called upon by that agency when changes to the rules for pensions and annuity payments are being considered. For some reason they seek her expertise in the area and her view on how such changes might effect businesses and taxpayers.

From experience, I can attest to the fact that no one wants to "get stuck with an audit" by the IRS. The stress and worry is worse than the event. Even though I'd done things correctly, there is the fear that I had made a mistake and an innate at fear of the agency itself.

Audited 2 X ( a royal pain!) Especially when the error they found was THEIRS! And we had to PROVE it. :(

@Nyboy I bet that is a really nice table. So glad you are using it. It's value is in the fact that it was Grandma's more than as an antique, right? I am always amazed at how having an old piece refinished lowers the value on shows like *The Antique Roadshow*.!
