I have a tub of caraway seed that I bought for baking from the Amish market last fall. I was thinking about planting some for my herb garden -- do you think they'll germinate?

Welcome to TEG, I am going to say they most likely will, I doubt that the Amish will dry them using heat.
But I dont know much about that type of seed. Glad you joined

Thanks for the warm welcome! I probably have 1/3 lb of seed and I only use a tbsp at a time so I have plenty to spare. I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

Thanks again!

Welcome to our gardens. If you want to be sure it is viable dampen a paper towel and wrap a few seeds in it, then put in a baggie. Keep it in a warm place and if the seed is good you will see sprouts in a week or so. Then you can plant it in a seed tray with confidence.

Having looked at the price of caraway ($5.00 for 1.88 oz.) I will be growing some this spring. Looking through the seed catalogs I noticed that Territorial is offering a new variety that produces seed the first year. Common caraway (Carum carvi) is a biennial.
Does anyone have an opinion as to weather this new variety would be a GMO or hybrid? In the catalog they list this new variety as Carum carvi also.

Lighthawk, I would ask them when you order. It is my understanding that most "gardeners seed" isn't GMO. I can't imagine a big enough market for caraway to warrant it.
