LOL, Tutter, thats exactly what I did a few minutes ago. I just dug up one of the small ones that I did not cut, and it had about 2 inches of growth on the eyes. I guess they are growing, they just are really slow. Maybe its the variety I got. Last year I did russets or the gold ones this year they are the red potatoes.

My taters are beautiful! At least 2 ft tall, green, lush, and starting to flower. I hope I didn't just jinx them!!
When we raised taters when I was growing up my dad use to fight constantly with tater bugs! He would get so mad he would plow them over and start over with a fresh planting. I haven't had a single problem with mine. My mom commented on how beautiful they are and I should have planted more. I wish I had too. Next year for sure!
I tried the fence and newspaper trick on 2 of my plants. I didn't have any tires. And it is back breaking to shovel that dirt. I don't know how the yield will be but I can't wait to find out.
