Can always buy some fresh from store. Do NOT buy the frozen, breaded okra-bad attempt at okra. Only good for okra junkies, then poor try.

Never had gumbo either :hide I think if it (okra)were offered to me I'd eat it but I certainly won't go out and grow some with my limited garden space. They look interesting though.
Ahhhh.......gumbo.... :drool Swamp Soup! I love gumbo! Shrimp! Chicken and sausage! Duck! Crab! Alligator! Yum! :gig:gig

Worst gumbo I ever made was with rattlesnake--I don't recommend it. :tongue Rattlesnake is MUCH better fried.

Campbell's has a "chunky" gumbo.

Okra, tomatoes, . . You may need to separate out the green pepper to be sure you are tasting the okra if it is a first taste. But then, okra is rather unique.

I usually grow Amish paste tomatoes, along with a few others.

This is just my opinion, but once you come up with a good recipe for homemade tomato soup, you will no longer want to match the taste of Campbell's. You will have surpassed it by far!

Probably want to leave the rattlesnake out.

Man, I was flying, one summer day at lunchtime! Sauteed some sweet onion, may have been a couple of shallots, had a cutting board piled with chopped beefsteak tomatoes! Tossed that in! Cup of shredded Cheddar. Minced cilantro, probably. Dumped a can of Campbell's in there . . .

DW claimed it was my best . . . I didn't know whether to be pleased or disappointed.

I tried Amish Paste here on the zone 3/4 border in sugar sand with organic fertilizer. The plants grew wonderfully but the tomatoes were really small with good flavor. I grow San Marzano's now. I also had good luck with Purple Russian tomatoes for a paste variety. I did half San Marzano's and half Purple Russians in my tomato recipes and it worked out great. If you can get past the weird color of the PR and appreciate the wonderful taste they are winners in my book!

I just got in some of my tomato seeds :celebrateSomebody from homegrown goodness offered them to me before the whole blackberry thing. He told me he was going to send the Campbell 1327, but when I opened it, he had sent a packet of the 1327 AND a packet of a pear shaped Campbell tomato called the Campbell 19 :celebrate What a nice surprise. :) Of course this puts me up to 7 varieties of tomato when I had planned for two :hide

About 15 years ago, I grew Viva Italia paste tomatoes. It was almost completely by accident! I couldn't figure out why I chose a non-sweet tomato.

It is all @Wishin' s fault! This year I have deliberately chosen a paste tomato! It is an early variety and a determinate: Heinz 2653 Paste Tomato.

I don't usually go for a determinate variety but this has the days to maturity that should fit well with the season here. You know, these paste varieties require a long season usually.

That I have done this is all Wishin's fault.
