Their bodies are responding to their environment, MontyJ. Since the Sexlinks all have about the same genetics, their responses should also be about the same.

Besides the genetics, it is the amount of daylight, the nutrients in their diet, etc. The hormones begin to flow.

Out pops an egg. Their eggs will be really . . . what was the word (?) . . . ah yes, "hinky." There won't be much consistency to the eggs at first. Usually, they will be small but not always.

Haven't cracked this egg yet...waiting for Dew to get a picture of it... ...then it's on! It looks like a small egg to me...or a small egg sandwich.

the eggs you get the first year are referred to as 'pullet' eggs since they are usually small but will get bigger as the bird ages. this is one reason why breeders of heritage fowl wait to hatch eggs from their breeder birds till they go through their adult moult. the eggs are at their full size by 18 months and can support a full sized chick. pullet eggs tend to have smaller chicks that may not survive hatching or be hardy enough if they do hatch.

Dew didn't mention that she got another egg today. Whoever is doing it, is doing it in the morning. I'm off tomorrow so I think I'll have coffee by the chicken coop. Maybe I'll get lucky and be able to confirm who it is.

I thought it was kind of funny that when MontyJ went out to the coop and looked there weren't any eggs.... I go out about 45 minutes later and find one on the floor under the roost. :D I've been going out several times a day just to check that there aren't any more laying out there.

Heh, something I just thought about is the girl singing the egg song may not be the girl that left the egg! I found it a funny sight when my girls will hang around another as she's getting ready to lay and she will be all quiet till the egg has passed. The other girls and sometimes my boys will join in the early celebration.

when you see a girl running around frantically searching for something you can guess she's the one laying or about to lay.
Cool I'll have to watch for that. I bet that's pretty cute
