We Always fry up our okra. I use shortening or olive oil and some cornmeal. DD steals quarts of it. SHE fries up in plain bacon grease.
The trick is to use a big pan and spread out the cut pieces so that they all have contact. Then, you cook SLOW and keep and eye on it. Sometimes it can take up to one hour to fry up, but it's worth it!

Still thinking about a Berliner in Louisiana enjoying okra ... ;)

Welcome :frow, Yvonne!

I've grown okra but the plants were probably miserable. I've always liked it in soup. Fried was fine!

Don't remember ever having it in a stew but Dad would have not been pleased. I guess that the sliminess might have even put that Southern Boy off even the flavor, which is too bad, IMO. Gumbo is something of a silly name. "Soup" is too when you think about it :D. What is that, onomatopoeia? ssouuupp

Steve :)
