I've been a pickle-making fool this summer! I've made dill pickles, bread & butters & pickle relish. I tried sweet peppers but they all shriveled up, so those went to the chickens. What I think I'd like to do is sweet pickles, but use the jalapenos from the garden as well. Anyone have a good recipe? Or how many jalapenos would you recommend I add to a recipe so that the pickles are hot, but not enough to set someone on fire? :D

Hi Kate! We have fooled around with spicy bread and butter batches several times. I have put ground up chilies in the brine mix as it was heating as well as in the bottom of the jar before anything else goes in. I figure about one jalapeno or so per jar. They have yet to make anybody gag and have a good kick to them.

I say try several different methods and amounts and keep notes. Good luck and happy pickling!:coolsun

Your post got me to thinking and I went downstairs and got a quart of "spicy" Bread & Butters. Maybe I have been eating too many jalapenos, cayennes and habeneros, but I was not impressed. Maybe I have been eating too many fresh hot chilies and have aquired a tolorance. Tread lightly but have fun! :)

I regularly take and add a jalapeno sliced up seeds and all to a quart sized jar of sweet dill pickles. Makes a nice hot/sweet pickle that isn't scorching hot, but still has great flavor. Hope this helps.
