What is it that you don't like about bread makers? People I know that have them don't use them because of time and don't see value in doing it themselves vs. just buying at store. I was looking for a garage sale one.

I got inspired by Lesa to make homemade bread. So I started looking for a bread machine on craigs list and they all seem kind of old. Well one day there was one and she was in Alameda! She was asking $35 for it and said she paid $250 for it and that Amazon still sells them. Sure enough it was there. It was a steal for $35. I LOVE it. In the past I had made bread by hand but now I love this machine. I use it every weekend to make 2 loafs that I freeze to have for the week. I like that you just throw everything in it, the dough has it's first rise inside it so when it's done, I just put it into pans, let rise for 30 min. and bake.

And here I thought it was just aging that was making things taste not so good anymore. But I can see how the US changing ingredients in food, going cheaper, is affecting any quality our foods once had.

I love my bread machine! Ninny I am so glad yours is working out for you! I can and do make bread without the machine, however, I have the machine down to a science now- it is super easy doesn't make a mess- and is delish! I do not bake my bread in the machine- I hate the way that comes out. I use the machine on "dough" cycle and bake it in the oven. I literally throw the ingredients in the machine, take my shower, work for a little while- let the bread rise and bake. We haven't had store bought bread in years!

I used to make loaves of bread in the bread machine but was never really happy with the results. Now I just use it to mix and rise the dough, then transfer the batter to a loaf pan and bake it in the oven. It does give the dough a good rise and you don't have to be so fussy about ambient temperature.

I had a couple different bread machines over the years and I always up using just the dough cycle on them because we didn't like the baked version that came out. In that case, the 'set it and forget it' feature was lost. In the end, I'd rather have my stand mixer taking up room in my kitchen that I can use to do many things, than a bread machine that gives me an unsatisfactory end product. I find that it takes very little of my time to make bread using the stand mixer, but you do have to keep track of it and be around for the rising stages. It doesn't take much effort for the final kneading, shaping, and baking, IMHO. I generally make white, multi-grain, deli and European rye, whole wheat, and pumpernickel loaves.

I bake bread quite a bit, but mostly during the winter, when I have more time.
