That is a terrible feeling. I hit a dog a few years ago. It was raining, I was on a very busy highway and a big black dog jumped out of the grass in the median. With cars beside me and behind me, slick road and driving rain, I hit him. In the rear view mirror, I saw him cross the other lane and disappear into some houses. It didn't help that our own dog was big and black.
